7 mag 100 grain Hollow points
Going Antelope Hunting this year, and what I only have loaded is 175 RN
and 100 grain Hornity Hollow points for the 7 mag. I realy don't want to start on a new load for an Antelope and was thinking of using the 100 grainers . Anyone drop a deer or an Antelope with one of these 100 grain hollow points? What is your thought on this ? |
Which 100gr hollowpoint? If you are referring to the Sierra 100gr varminter,it is designed for varmints as the name suggests, and the result will likely be very messy with excessive meat damage.
|
Hornity as stated above.
|
Not exactly the most prudent choice with antelope in your sights.
Why not just load up something more appropriate like a 120TSX, or a 139-140gr AB, IB, or similar. You'll have lots of time to work your load up any ways. Those 100gr HP's are not a game bullet any way you slice it. BTW: Where are you going antelope hunting, to know this far in advance? |
The Hornady100gr hollowpoint is also not a good choice for big game hunting, and will likely result in similar damage to the Sierra 100gr HP.
As Dick suggests, try the 120gr TTSX or a good 140gr bullet.Such a bullet will work well on all game from pronghorn to moose. |
Antelope meat is not high on my list.
Might go with 168 grain burgers. I also don't have a scope yet for this rifle so I might just hammer one with my 338 mag . 250 Grain BT should work just fine. Dead is dead ! |

Antelope
I feel the same as rackmaster and elkhunter.
Sounds like a real conservationist type!!!!! Ken. |
Realy have you ever shot anything in the chest with a 338.
Hole going in is about the same size as a 7 mag and the same size going out as a 7 mag in a small game animal So what meat are you realy damaging. And to top it off, have you ever eaten Antelope. What is it 8 years to get drawen on a throphy now I have taken four back in the day. Last one was about 15 years back Top of my list is Moose Bottom is Antelope Nothing wrong with that If you guys like Antelope meat more than moose ,elk or even deer I would have to say ,you never tried it and just like barking . Someone will then say ,did you skin it right away,or did you cook it right ? It does not realy matter ,its not the top of choice for wild meat and neather is sheep. Thats why they call it a Throphy Antelope Hunt. If I was after the meat I would go for non throphy .:tongue2: Have a nice day:wave: |

I could care less if you dont like antelope as much as some, the fact is you're a slob hunter by making comments like that and treating meat as a 'throw-away' because you dont like the taste. And no...thats NOT why they call it a Trophy Antelope Hunt. Your attitude makes me sick. You are what the non-hunting community thinks a 'Trophy Hunter' is. To the rest of the hunting community, you're a slob. |

Ken. |
O forgive me !
I guess I should go out and buy a $800. scope for the 7 mag and Spend anouther $200 . driving back and forth to a gun range to get a diffenent load so I do not wast 4 oz of antilope meat more . How stupit was I talking openly like this! Yes Yes, I should be going for a head shot ,this way I can save the heart for supper . As great hunter we all are we should not waste nothing. |

Or, you could easily hunt your antelope with your 7mm and the 175 gr bullets. But, then you wouldn't have anything to whine about.

I live in Medicine Hat, and see antelope everyday. I don't think they are near as cunning as people say. I wouldn't think a lighter bullet would do any better in the wind down here either. I use the 175gr Hornady's in my 7mm for mule deer down here with great results.
I would guess that after they've been hunted hard for a couple of days, they would get alot flightier. But, I'm sure a shot at 300 yds or closer is still within easy grasp. |

I can't see why it would be a big problem. Sure it aint the best choice, but it would work just fine. If he didn't want to spend the $200 driving to the range all the time. If he doesn't want to shoot much for practice, maybe he shouldn't be shooting past 300 yds? |
If you don't like the meat, don't shoot the animal!
Simple. |

I have eaten a few pounds of antelope and enjoyed every bit greatly. The people that prepared the meat, I know from experience, cared and prepared it well. You have eaten some bad 'lope. Thats too bad. Load what you want and obey the laws. Past that you haven't made many friends on this thread if it isn't already apparent. Just hit'em in the front half for the animals sake, eh? |
