River Monsters- Bow River
Well, there's no man-eaters in there, but I've heard rumors of some big fish.
I haven't seen any evidence of fish over the 24''-25" mark. So, what's the biggest trout (or charr) you've pulled, or seen pulled from the bow??? Post pics if you've gottem!!! |
my biggest browns out of the bow are just over the 30inch mark.
these ones are 27inches and 30inches caught back to back. theres lots of monsters in that river and i exclusly only fish for them on that river bcause i never had much luck on the bows with that river these browns are above the sewer if anyones wondering.... |

i dont fish it theres too much weeds and i cant get the toilet paper off my hook. iv only fished it once. |
Last friday about 8 p.m. while drifting the Bow, about 100 ft below the fish creek treated water outlet,( I believe that's what it's called) 20 ft. from the riverbank and about 6 ft. behind the boat, a fish of fairly massive size surfaced, 8-10" of girth, (from top of back to bottom of belly) only saw it's middle not head or tail. Only species I could reason with was a sturgeon or awfully big carp or sucker. I believe because it was fairly shallow there that as we drifted over at a fairly good speed we scared the fish and caused it to surface. Any thoughts?

Do you think it could take a mans leg off? Should I be worried about wearing my shiny belt-buckle in the river? |
Had a couple of 26"-28" browns this year, which are likely my biggest. I have seen a couple that were in the 31"-32" range, though.
Apparently, the record length for the species is 140cm/55" (ref: Muus, B.J. and P. Dahlström 1967 Guide des poissons d'eau douce et pêche. GEC Gads Forlag, Copenhague. 242 p. )...I would love to read the paper and see where that was caught. |

Between Policemans and McKinnon their are some HUGE suckers...we floated one day when SRD was Electro-Shocking (not a good day to float) ....the water was crystal clear in mid-Sept. and in the shallow pools you could see them and sometimes the shock would bring the odd one to surface....just guessing but 8#???...dunno

I've seen browns of 32-34" in the Bow, they are certainly there but very wise and easy to spook.
FH7 no offense meant here but check your tape, 30" brown is a massive fish with much larger head and kype if it is a male. You got some nice fish there, and any fisherman would love to catch something that big, no need to exaggerate fish size. |
Biggest I caught was an 8lb Rainbow on LT 5 O'Diamonds below Bassano dam and the same day a fellow beside me caught a 14 lb Rainbow on a worm (1980). But the two biggest trout I've seen free swimming were easily 15+++lbs, one last year at the Carseland weir and one when I was 12 (also witnessed by my Dad) below the 10th Street bridge.

Those fish are both clearly over the 24'' mark. Very clearly. Assuming the size of a fish from a photo is a foolish endeavor at the best of times. Either way, they are both large specimens of BR Browns... |

Those monster trout must have pretty good hiding spots as they cant migrate too far in the river due to all the obstacles. Anyone know what the deepest hole in town is? Are there any deep dark undercut banks? |

This is a 29'' Brown from the Bow, caught and released this summer on Canada day.

yep
Thanks Speckle.
Another point I've made before along a similar theme is that, more often than not, the fish story, is better than the fish itself. We're not always looking for scientifically accurate length, girth, and weight measurements with <5% error margins, we're often looking for good times, and good memories, with a pinch of personal challenge, serenity, and reverence. Hope the weather clears up in cowtown for us fair weather plunkers. |
