A day of shore fishing in K-Country...Where to go?
 

Hi all,

Saturday i'm planning on fishing for the day out in Kananaskis. Where would the best time/fish ratio spots be in your guys' opinion?

My plan was to hit (in no particular order)

• Mount Lorette Ponds
• Wedge Pond
• Sibbald Lake

Or, if there are better choices, i'm open to options. I'll be fishing with spinning gear from shore, mostly going after trout & grayling, though i don't really care as long as i can catch some fish!

I would not waste your time on Mt. Lorette. I believe it has been out fished and the only thing left in there is a few floaters

Barrier for whites, Little Elbow for tonnes of brookies - worth the 2.2km hike just for the views, try the upper reaches of the Highwood for cutties, bulls and bows.
Another suggestion is Spray for whites and lakers, but that is west of Canmore.

My bet for the best fishing is the Highwood.

Little Elbow...I don't mind a short hike, but how to you get to the trailhead? Also, where is the Highwood located? Did a quick google search and looks like the highwood crosses highway 40 south of the village.

Sorry for all the newbie questions, this is my first fishing trip in Alberta in a long, long time.

Wedge has a small # of fish not really worth it. If you want Greyling go to Quarry Lake right in Canmore

If you are coming from Chestermere, you'll probably take the #1 highway out to Kananaskis, but for a nicer, less crowded drive, take the 541 route through Longview, south of Calgary on hwy 22. This meets up with hwy 40, just from the south. If you continue up the 40 you will end up back at the #1.

This map has little elbow on it, I marked it with a green arrow. If travelling from the north route via hwy 1, it is on your left marked Elbow lake or Elbow pass, about 40km or so from the # 1... I was out there last year and the sign does not say little elbow lake. The hike is 2.2 km ish.... Watch out for bears.

The Highwood comes out of the Highwood pass and travels south east toward Okotoks. The Sheep river meets up with it just near Okotoks, and eventually into the Bow, near Dunbow road. Nice bull trout, but this river is heavily fished. I have given jerks chit on the Highwood for leaving crap and garbage behind on OUR river. Please respect one of the most beautiful river systems we have close to Calgary.

Be sure to have your licence on you, the CO's out there are plentiful, but ALL of my experiences with them have been great. They have been polite, and courteous everytime I have talked with them.

Good luck! Try small spinners or spoons for those Brookies, but fly fishing in a float tube or waders is what will catch the most fish.

TFG, it's actually just called Elbow Lake, not Little Elbow. Hiked by Elbow Lake on Sunday and saw tons of fish. Was by Lilian and Lower Galatea Lakes a week ago and fish were rising like crazy. Both good bets if you don't mind hiking a bit.

It's strange... I have only heard this lake referred to as Little Elbow lake, as you mentioned the sign says Elbow Lake or pass. Good to hear that someone was out there recently.

I will refer to it as Elbow lake now :)

Thanks very much for the google earth link! that's bad *****. And no worries on keeping the outdoors pristine. It is one of my biggest pet peeves when i see trash, cigarette butts and the like strewn about outside, and so uncalled for. If you carried it in, you can carry it out!

So the GF isn't too keen on a hike in for our first fishing excursion....choosing my battle on this one, we can go to elbow lake in a couple weeks.

For a drive in, truck close by kind of day, you still recommend highwood? Is there a good chance of catching both grayling & trout in Quarry Lake?
