Fly Reel on an Ice Rod???

So I searched here and found that many are doing this so I figured I'd just use an older fly reel I had laying around.

I have all the basics of the setup figured out but seeing as I've never actually used a fly reel I have one remaining question.
When spooling this reel I know that backing comes before whatever ice line I choose. My question is when spooling it how do I handle the line roller? (See pics)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW the reel is a Crystal River Royal Coachman CR-2102.

Cheers.

I got te older model of that reel and it jammed up during the hard water season last year. Not the best reel to use during the hardware if you plan on fishig whites! Don't worry about the roller t will get filled with ice and freeze your line.

Guy I was fishing with LY had the same issue, he gave it a good bath in WD-40 and voila! No more issues. Oddly enough his luck seemed to approve after that as well.

Cheers.

To answer your question you reel has rollers on both sides, so it doesn't matter which way you spool your line.

For highly technical hard water fishing you need the right equipment....
