Cayo Santa Maria.... need advice
Hey guys,
my wife and I are heading on a vacation to Cayo Santa Maria. Has anyone fly fished there before? Any recommendations? Do I need a fishing licence? Its my first time going so please excuse the lack of knowledge. :test: |
Nice, so jealous!! Never been however I have spent many a day walking the flats next island over in Cayo Coco...you don't need a license but hiring a guide for a day would be something to consider. There's quite a bit of info on Coco in this forum, do a search you'll come up with some good ideas for Santa Maria, same water same fish!!

Went there last year. No licence needed.
Fished the beach in the morning around the resort we where at. Saw some tarpon rolling, but they were to far away to reach with my fly rod. Hooked a few small Baracuda's. Walked the road to some bridges a few days. Lots of fish, but not interested in what I was doing. One other guy at the resort fished for 2 weeks just around the resort and the bridges. He was catching some tarpon using some big top water lures. Lots of mangroves around where I was at. I had intentions on taking a kayak out, but you could only have them for 2 hours even after I tried bribing, and didn't feel like it was the effort. Quote:

Thanks for the reply guys!
Any ideas if I can take my gear on the plane with me instead of putting it in the luggage? I am planing on hiring a guide that is if they are available. Been emailing a few without any response back yet. |
fished cayo coco few weeks ago......fishing was awesome, so many different kinds of fish. fresh shrimp was the ticket for me, the bonefish went crazy one night and lots and lots if needlefish and grunts.
I didn't take my fly rod and regretted it so giver hell.......grass shrimp patterns I would think for the bonefish. the local guys when you can communicate with them will give you lots of info. enjoy! |
