My winch only works going in.

I took the switch apart. There was no power on the out toggle of the switch but no corsion or obvious issues.
I can hear the relay click when I press the toggle switch in but not out.
Just wondering if there is a simple way to figure out if it is the switch, relay or something internal in the winch

It was Jammed and couldn’t free spool so I had to switch main power to the winch to get it to spin out.

Sounds like winch solenoid failure. Cheap replacement if it is the cause

If it’s an older winch and while it’s apart consider upgrading the gear kit also. Makes for a stronger line braking ability.

It’s likely the solenoid(s). To test the motor you can jumper the armature to one field winding at a time then apply power to the other field winding (leave your ground attached). One combination will be in and one will be out. You can either clean the solenoids or be smart and buy a contactor. The solid state contactors are the way to go on your electronics. If you buy a quality unit you’ll probably never have to think about it again.

I presume you have power to one side of the solenoid. If true, Take a multi meter and check the controller, you should have no continuity with the switch centered, zero or close Ohms with switch engaged. If it doesn't go to zero ohms when you trigger the switch then that is your issue. If the switch is working then jump the solenoid. If the winch powers out it is clearly the solenoid. If it doesn't power out it is in the connections inside the winch motor.

Just had this issue with my fiancé’s Yamaha. Brand new and went to use it for the second time and it quit. I guess it’s quite often these solenoids crap the bed and 100 bucks for a new one. If it fails again or the one in my quad fails, I’ll change the switch out to take out the solenoid. The grey circle winch controllers don’t take a solenoid.
