modified p-rigs

Thinking about making some homemade p-rigs for fishing this summer. Mainly be fishing for perch and the odd trout. Would like to make something that's more sturdy then the ones you can buy in the cheap packages, something with 2 or 3 hooks that doesn't tangle very easy. Thoughts? anybody have any pictures of ones they've made? appreciated, thanks. :) (and on a sidenote, what do you guys find are the sharpest best quality snelled, and just plain hooks.)

Well I tie my own rigs with braid or fluoro carbon. With braid its alot easier to get tangled mid cast but once you get the hang ot it its fine. I use 3 hooks on mine to cover more water column. As for hooks and snells, I buy 3/0 - 5/0 circle hooks, usually eagle claw, and Snell them myself with fluorocarbon. Now adays though I generally just run a slip sinker rig as its become a personal fsvorite rig. Good luck to ya!!

thanks :), I like the metal arms on the cheapy p rigs but not totally sure how I would rig it with an extra hook, I could do it if I saw how but i'm pretty bad at being creative haha. i could definetely try making some out of fluoro but not sure exactly how, i'll have to try to experiment i guess.

I know when I tie this type of rig I use fluro to go to the weight cause it's more abrasion resistance vs braid

When I fish with a rig like that I use a lower test mono line to my weight then what I use on my main line, or leader. If by chance the weight gets snagged while a fish is on, I'd rather loose the weight and not the fish. Same goes if it gets hung up real good on bottom. I have friends that dive the rivers and collect weights so I have spares around everywhere.

Oh okay that makes sense now.

Never used a rig like this before.. I like it.

If a guy were to rig it up with 60lb fluro leader material and a heavy duty three-way swivel I imagine it would be a decent sturgeon rig?

that kind of setup would work well for river fishing... but I forgot to mention i'd mostly be still fishing from a boat, and sometimes casting under a bobber, would like something that is a lighter set up with 2-3 hooks mostly for perch.....

If you are not after lunkers ..... a P-Rig is fine. Nothing wrong with it except the silly snelled hooks it comes with.

Just buy a decent pack of Gamakatsu snelled hooks and you are set ......

http://www.gamakatsu.com/fishing-hooks_snells.htm

Alternately - buy the p-rigs and remove the line and replace it with what you want ..... you can simply use the wire spreader arms and beads and make your own set up with three arms if you wanted to.

I'm thinking that's probably what i'm going to do, the line on the p-rigs is pretty decent but yeah the hooks are garbage. Probably end up just adding another hook on, or using it the way it comes... guess i'll just have to go out and try it and see how she goes..... Thanks :)

I like Octopus hooks personally, but also use baitholders. I generally buy matzuo, Gamakatsu are a great hook as well. I don't really buy pre-snelled hooks I prefer to do it myself with a 20lb test.

iirc there's a swivel at the top of the p-rig to attach to the mainline. just add another snell line there. should be fine.

I use a very similar setup for Chinook Salmon in the rivers. Don't see sturgeon being an issue.

I could add another snell just off the swivel, but then there would be no arm on it and I think it might tangle easier.... I could add another arm above it, but then it makes hook changing a problem unless i add another swivel above....

loop a piece of stiff wire through one eye on the swivel, make a loop or too where your snell line will pass through then back through the swivel and wrap it off. should act like an arm to relieve tangles. either that or learn to do nice lob casts with it, or just drop it down under a bobber with no cast.

only thing else I can think of is to buy 3 p-rigs, cut them up and make them into 2. with some pieces left over of course.

catchandeat 04-06-2013 09:04 PM

Well in the end I decided to chop up a couple of p-rigs and put them back together with some glo-beads. gonna finishing rigging them up with gakamatsu hooks, and I think i'm in business. I'm going to take a picture of it next week when I get my ipod back.... thanks for all the help everybody. :)

catchandeat 04-10-2013 07:54 PM

Well, I finally got my crappy ipod camera back, and took a picture of the rig I made:
http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/ca...ibrary/?page=1

sorry for the terrible photo quality, i'm going to try and upload better pictures later, but for the moment this is all I got. Basically I took a normal p-rig, and then cut another one in half, and then joined them together at the swivel ends, and added some cool glow beads at both ends. Sorry again for the terrible image quality, but just felt like sharing the rig I made..
thanks :)

oops.. you'll have to forgive my noobishness with photobucket, i'll try and make it public, thanks for the notice.

catchandeat 04-10-2013 08:03 PM

you can try it now, pretty sure I just made it public.

huntsfurfish 04-10-2013 08:08 PM

Works fine now.

Looks like a neon sign right to your bait. Nice work!

thanks! i'm still not very good at tying and making things, but i'm hoping it'll work good this summer :)

Wild&Free 04-11-2013 10:19 AM

Good job. I might make something similar for the Peace River while it's still dirty after the close the spillway.

thanks :) i'm hoping the beads combined with the bait will work well in dirty water... if not it's back to the drawing board... haha

I have better luck with what I call an "earplug rig" than with P rigs. Its pretty much just a carolina rig with a chunk of earplug speared on the hook to float the bait off the bottom.

cool, do you mainly use it for rivers, or in lakes as well?

I've used it in rivers but I use a longer leader from the sinker to hook and more floatation. In a river the current pushes it down and the floatation causes it to bob up and down off the bottom. The longer the lead the higher it will ride off the bottom. In a lake it will float straight up. In a lake I usualy use 10"-18" and in a river up to 3-4'. A very versitile rig, with a heavy sinker you can just soak bait, a ligher one you can cast and retrieve, work it allong the bottom, or let it drift in the current.

Not that theres anything wrong with a good old "P" rig. I know some fishermen like to trash talk them but they are easy to use and they plain old work. I just got back from Florida where I did a fair amount of fishing on party boats. Typical of charter boats they had most of the rods rigged up with a dummy proof "P" rig type deal and a few rods rigged up to keep the "more advanced" fishermen entertained. I usualy opted for the latter but without fail, at the end of the trip the guys with the patience to soak a dropper rig all day always had the most fish.
