Register a Boat
 

Bought a fishing boat couple years ago and a little light bulb flick on in my head that i have not yet register/license it. It has numbers on the hull from the previous owner( my boss) and i have no idea where to go to change the ownership or to register it in my name. I talked to my boss and he is unsure where to go because he bought it new and they did it for him at the dealership.

A little help would be appreciated

You need to do that through a Canada Customs office. You will keep the same number on the hull, but just change the ownership. They will require the bill of sale and the original registration document with the change of ownership section completed. (similar to selling/buying a car).

If the original registration document is missing then they will accept a note from the seller confirming that the boat/motor has changed hands (at least they did for me).

Actually, I just went through this process about 2 months ago.

All registration of boats is now done through Service Canada. I tried to get you the direct link, but it's timing out for some reason. Here's the link to Service Canada anyway - http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/en/home.shtml

There's a PDF form on the site that you can download. Just fill it out, and take your bill of sale to any Service Canada center and it takes about 5 mins (once you wait in line for 1/2hr).

If you are in Edmonton there is a Service Canada office at the Meadowlark Shopping Centre. Done our boat there last year.

Hello….I am new to this, so I thought I would start here. Do you need to register a 12 ft aluminum boat that has a 9.9 engine? If so, what paperwork do I need? Thanks

You do not need to register it if it has less than a 10hp motor, so your 9.9hp is fine staying unregistered.

Hey guys we just upgraded from a 9.8 tohatsu to a 15HP. WHere do i go to register and what do i need to register? i have a bill of sale from when we bought it 2 years ago. I am also in edmonton

It is true that you do not need to register your boat if less than 10 HP but you still can as it's optional. It does not cost anything and there are a couple of advantages of it. One that comes to mind is that any recalls for your hull/boat will find you. If your boat is ever stolen and found it will get back to you etc.

Will the hood off the 9.8 fit on your 15?

Hmmm....I've thought I read differently here that the law is now ANY boat with a motor requires registration.

So a inflatable seamax with a minn kota DOES NOT require any registration?

Why do I need a pleasure craft licence?
A valid pleasure craft licence helps law enforcement and search and rescue workers identify pleasure craft in emergency situations. By law, any pleasure craft, including a personal watercraft, that is powered by one or more motors adding up to 10 hp (7.5 kW) or more must have a valid licence. You must display the licence number on both sides of the bow of your boat in block characters that are at least 7.5 centimetres (3 inches) high, in a colour that contrasts with the colour of the bow.

Has anyone ever been asked for their boat registration? I have purchased a few used boats over the past 20 yrs and I always transfer the registration. A couple of them even though they had numbers had never before been registered and the previous owners told me they never registered and they never had a problem in all their years.

I have never been asked to present the registration and don't know anybody who has?

2) click on "application for Pleasure Craft Licence and print
3) fill out information as directed (new boat registration / transfer)
4) attach documentation require (bill of sale Etc.)
5) mail to address on form

6) wait. The process is slow but transferring a registration you have 90 days from date of sale (keep bill of sale and copy of application in boat till you get new paperwork). Same thing with new registration. keep copies of paperwork with you and its hard for anyone to really give you grief for using the boat while you wait

Fill in the form, send to gov, and they will send you back the registration with a specific number. Go buy some decals and stick on the boat.......all is free except for the cost of the decals.
I have never been asked for mine, but I do have a copy on board.
Another benefit, if your boat is floating down the river or across the lake with a ghost rider, the authorities can trace it back to the owner.

Never. For that matter I have been checked at the boat launch & on water by F&W many times & NEVER been asked for my PCOC which is a particular burr up my you-know-what since they made such a huge deal out of it a couple years ago!

I imagine the only time you would get asked for boat registration is if the boat was reported/suspected stolen or you got picked going through one of those joint RCMP & F&W check stops they do once in a while.

Got asked twice last year for it on Wabamun by the CO's in the white boat.

As of April 1 2013 Every vessel other than pleasure craft must be registered.
I don't bother. Decals are hard on the paint and look bad.
