good cheap saltwater reel?
 

heading to PV mexico.....the reel i used last time worked for 2 days cause it sucked...lol.
is there a decent saltwater reel for 50 bucks?

Cabella's SaltStriker is about $20 - 30 more depending on model than your $50 target. but perform as well as reels priced in the $150 - 200 range. All saltwater reels should be rinsed with freshwater after every use and thoroughly cleaned and lubed with a good corrosion dissolving solvent after every trip.

Buy one of the piscifun reels on Amazon. I have a few and they have surprised me. Nothing will be amazing for $50, but easily get you through a Mexico trip. Main thing is cleaning your reel after every trip out. Salt water is harsh on any reel

In Cabo and Manzanillo I used the following set up and it did me well.
Very reasonably priced and good quality. Cabela's brand are made by Daiwa I believe.

I have never tried the Cabela’s reel. Maybe get a couple then if one blows up you have a backup. I have been using penn reels and last year got a shamano 5500.
Every day after I fished I do a quick dip of the reel right into the chlorine pool the take it to the shower and rinse it off very well. Then if you can blow dry if in the washroom. Once your home strip it and grease it up.

i got a penn battle 2 for fishing the salt down here in texas.
i like it so far. unsure what the price is up there but it was 80 for rod and reel here. so most likley 2057834895734$ in canadian.

ill get the cabelas reel....seems good...but what size do i get with this rod?

I would get the biggest reel as it has the 40" retrieve rate which is the most important thing. Just don't get it wet. The rod is a little short for surf fishing and you will then try and wade in the surf for more distance which will break rule #1. But it will work good in a boat for trolling as my shortest rod, the 11'-6" is a little awkward at times but it works well for casting to a boil, 75-100 yds away. The Rapala 11'-6" is an adequate rod that will get you over 100 yds distance but it suffers from poor quality guides as the rings will fall out. I'm headed to PVR sunday morning for 9 days. Looks like the weather should be good. Last year a storm parked just off the coast for 8 days and churned up the waves and dirtied the water, the bite lasted 5 minutes morning and afternoon. Only caught 4. And of course my last morning the water cleared, waves calmed down and the fish came in close as I had to pack it in at 10:00 am.
I recommend 40-50 lb braid with an 80 lb mono leader. I cut back about 5' of braid every day and redo all my knots as fish teeth and stress on the line weaken it. I've lost too many $30.00 lures do to not doing this and it really sucks when those are the ones that are working. I haven't lost any lures the last few times I have done this.

The 80 B is a huge reel. I use the 50B on my med heavy saltwater spin rods for inshore use, but would consider the 65B if I wanted to target fish over 40 lb -most likely offshore use.

Have taken many of the salt strikers down to Mexico for my fishing friends. They love them and always want more... They go on sale often as well. Have 6 more to take down next time I head south.Get the 65...

well now i need a cheap 11.5 food rod....lol....any ideas? i see the fishing hole will be having a sale.soon....maybe i should wait????

Rapala Magnum Baja Travel Rod...im thinking that with the cabelas reel....ill wait for TFH sale....and if i dont find anything...im leaning towards this set up with 40 lb spiderwire or something.....

The best of the bunch for a saltwater spinning reel is the Daiwa BG series. Expect to pay between 100-150 depending on the size needed. I have used the Daiwa BG for both water types and can say that it is the best reel I have used including the top end Shimano's. I’ve always used freshwater reels and just rinse them super good straight after every use. I don’t fish salt every day obviously but I do get some decent time in the salt and I haven’t had anything break Down On me yet. Haven’t seen the need to spend money on salt gear when my cheap freshwater stuff is still working. Everyone told me it wouldn’t but it does if you take care of it.

Diawa is the way to go, I worked at Cabela's, for a time, and the only reels that came back were ****mano's, and not just the cheap ones. The Cabela's branded reels are made by Diawa and are very reasonable.
I've heard from more the one person that bought the cheapest setup they could find, only to have the setup grenade on the first day wrecking their trip.

yep ive settled on the cabelas reel.....just gotta get the rod. im thinking a 11.5 footer that has a case for traveling....ill get both at cabelas.....

Never had trouble bringing rods back... but alot of times just choose to leave them down there for the fishermen

I fish all over the Caribbean during the winter and yup I get back to our place and In The bathtubs goes my gear for a soak and a rinse.:)
