Alberta Turkey's?

Day #3 comes to a close, has anyone had any success yet?

hawken 05-03-2018 09:25 PM

We had 2 toms at 60 yards today. Couldn’t get it done. I’ll update tomorrow.
May the 4th be with me.

Not to be a jerk but potentially you should not be drawn till the 2030's

People got drawn with a 9 for 2018. Believe they just gave out over 100 draws. Lots of remaining priority 9's and a lot of 999's. Plus alot of 8's who will be fighting for tags when those above in front are done.

Just a question, where does one hunt these fat buggers?
Crown land?
In the hills?

19429 applicants including 999ers
125 tags
= 155 years (yes, people will drop out of the draws)
If you start when your 12 and live longer than other hunter your age, you just may have a chance.

I have been drawn twice, first year was a massive learning curve (no bird) as there was very few spots to hunt. I think that our season it to late in the spring as we miss the first gobbling, when our season opens you getting a shot at the second gobbling for any hens that didn't take, and that only lasts for about a week after opening day then you couldn't even get them to shock gobble or come in with a call. Second time the winter was wicked lots of snow and the predators hammered them. Only saw a 2 bird both on posted land. Again no bird. :(
I feel that Alberta turkey hunting is tough.

Like sheep, they need to limit turkeys to only residents of that zone.. enough of these city boys...

Eatin'

Question ... do the wild ones taste at all like domestic birds? Are they the same "gamey" taste relative to domestic as deer would be to beef or are they closer?

I am a priority 10 and am thinking about not 999'ing next year. (not that the taste would deter me ... just asking).

This thread is about guys/girls showing their Alberta turkeys off and sharing hunting experiences. If you want to discuss turkey tag distributions start your own thread. Thanks

My bird from last year in Alberta I found tasted a lot like ruffled grouse personally. Very little fat on him and legs were full of tendons. Really enjoyed the flavor though.

Bonescreek 05-08-2018 08:16 PM

Congratulations to all that got their birds this spring.

It's a good thing to see turkey season coming along in AB.

To me it's like hunting elk down here in VA, far and few between.

But when you can it's like a hunt of a lifetime.

:)

We drew 3 Tags a couple years ago. The most fun you can have with your clothes on..lol
We were very thankful for this opportunity and hope to pull it again at a P-12.
As far as taste our were delicious. I wish i owned my traegar grill back then i think it would taste amazing on it...
Good luck to the rest of you tag Holders this year and please share your pics on this thread...

fingershooter 05-09-2018 10:37 PM

We did one last weekend and it was great as usual. Brined for 8 hours and barbequed the breast and did the dark meat in an Instpot. That was the first time we tried one in an Instapot and it's the way to do them! One drummet escaped the pot and went on the bbq and it was way tougher. You can't beat the flavor and this was a pretty big tom.

I was finally drawn for this year and I have no time nor opportunity to hunt. So disappointing. Wasted tag and years of waiting.
