Shooting on Parliament Hill

One soldier shot at the War Memorial on Parliament Hill.

I wonder if the suspects are of a particular mindset?

Supposedly shots fired inside the Center Block.(not confirmed)

Parliament Hill's Centre Block is in lockdown after shots were fired in the building and a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial was shot.

Follow The Globe's Josh Wingrove (@josh_wingrove) for updates.

Eyewitnesses said an armed man with long black hair emerged at the war memorial, fired about four times‎, and a guard went down. The gunman then ran toward Parliament Hill. The shooting victim was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Police have sealed off the area. The gunman's whereabouts are unknown.

Police locked down Parliament and Ottawa Police tactical officers arrived, pointing guns at journalists and ordering them to the ground. Journalists were put into lockdown at the foyer in front of the House of Commons. Police were warning the public to stay away from Parliament Hill and the war memorial.

Reporters saw a body lying on the floor outside the Library of Parliament.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper “is safe and has left Parliament Hill,” Jason MacDonald, his director of communications, said via Twitter.

Amid the chaos, MPs were among those taking cover. Michelle Rempel, a Conservative MP from Calgary, used Twitter to communicate with the outside world: “Mom im okay Im in hiding.” She also tweeted: “is it clear people? shots were outside caucus room”.

It appears that officers were searching the building. One body was visible outside the library of parliament, roughly in the middle of Centre Block, but it was unclear if that was a suspect or a law enforcement official.

Second such act of terrorism in Canada this week already. I'd love to discuss this further but it'll probably lead to a banning. I hope the bleeding hearts are happy now.

This is a wake up call for all of Canada.

recce43 10-22-2014 08:53 AM

Prayers for the soldier and his family.. i hope the gunman rots in hell

Jack&7 10-22-2014 08:54 AM

Tell me that the pucker factor for Canadian military brass is not at level 10 right now. Years of cutbacks, etc. is now going to come back and bite us in the arse.

I have this sinking feeling because it is never a good thing to see chest compressions getting done on someone. I hope he pulls through....

Shots

OK folks --- gloves are off --- Can we rent space from the US at their place in Cuba? Maybe we should start our own. Heard that our security people have 90 or so "Canadians" on their radar. Lets see how much trouble these bastods can do from a wall tent 30 km's outside Inuvik? Fricken cowards. Anyone else have any suggestions as to what we can do to home grown terrorists.
Lets send another dozen planes.

Fisherpeak 10-22-2014 08:58 AM

I hope they shoot the SOB.

Skytop B 10-22-2014 08:58 AM

Probably a dumb question but are those soldiers armed with sidearm and rifle?

coolpete1 10-22-2014 08:59 AM

cops shot him to death in the building, is what they are saying , hope they are right

Arachnodisiac 10-22-2014 09:08 AM

I don't believe there's been any confirmation that the suspect has been apprehended or dispatched yet.

ali#1 10-22-2014 09:09 AM

Watching it now. Sad.

"CFB bases across canada locked down in ontario for sure" -global news.

Im thinking today will be a turning point in canadian history

raab 10-22-2014 09:12 AM

Wonder if this shooters name will be John Smith.... Also are we going to see more gun laws implemented because of this? Prayers and thoughts to the soldier and his family.
