KS arms rebarrel review and range report
 

Little back story on the gun, I had a 270ai built about 5 yrs ago, wasn't ever able to get it to shoot as well as I would have liked, and it only seemed to shoot 110grn bullets decently. After having enough of being frustrated I took it into ks to have them rebarrel the rifle, old barrel was spun off and it was a gain twist finishing somewhere around 1:12, not what I had asked for but not worth getting upset about.

Mike and Karl had my gun for about 2 months, and it came back exactly as I had wanted. Barrel matched the original contour for the custom stock perfectly. Nitride barrel finish matched the action almost perfectly. Over the course of the work they discovered some issues with the bolt I had supplied, and as they were already going to be machining the bolt face they provided me with a new magnum bolt, mated to my action.

Throughout the entire process mike was keeping me in the loop as to what was going on, and overall I'm very happy with the work they've done.

Tuesday I got out for my second range session doing some load development and things are shaping up nicely. 100 meters, 3 shots per target.

I haven't ran any reloads over a chrono yet, im waiting for my magnetospeed to arrive but will update when I get it. As of right now I'll be loading 6 rounds of #4,#6 and #9 and testing consistency on them before I make a final decision on what load to stick with.

All in all I'm very happy with the work ks has done for me, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone, as for me, they'll definitely be working on my next project.

What is the new barrel chambered in?

If you haven't chrony'd them yet, and you're at a 2 grain spread between test loads and running a 3-hundreths COAL variance per charge-weight...

That seems like a big gap of un-explored load development that could produce better results. Not to mention the limitations of a 3 shot group.

Nice gun. Congrats. John R1 is correct. Your load development plan is akin to having hunting permission on two sections of land, but only scouting a quarter.

I had KS do some work on a rifle ( rechambered from 7mm08 to 280 rem.) many years ago and I was extremely happy with the results.

Based on that target, load development for this rifle will be pretty easy.
The rl 22 load appears to be faster than the rl 19, your new chrony will prove that.
5 shot groups I don't believe are that useful in this case

this was the second round of load testing,I took the 3 best groups from the last round and tinkered with seating depth, so the "gaps" have been investigated. I dont see much of a point with 5 or 10 shot groups in a hunting rifle. I appreciate your concerns with my process and if i can't find a load I'm happy with ill re-evaluate what I'm doing. But I'm confident in my process.

The barrel is 26" haven't weighed the gun but i would estimate it around 8.5-9 pounds. As far as velocity i think the Rl 22 load would be 50-75 fps father than the Rl19, but i was also starting to get pressure signs, and bolt lift was pretty stiff so i think ill try and stay with something a little slower

Sorry, from your earlier post it was hard to determine if you had actually done load development or just took it out to test function/sight in your scope ?

Very nice looking rifle. Nothing like wood. Karl/Mike have chambered at least a dozen barrels for me, obviously I have a lot of confidence in their work.
TSX Have given me mixed results...some barrels like them...others not much...little middle ground. I would not hesitate to try other bullets.

I just had a criterion barrel spun on a p14 303brit by ks and it is nailing tacks. Interestingly I upped my enfield loads by 1 gr. No big deal I thought as I was 80fps slower than surplus. Well I took a couple shots and figured something is wrong as my shoulder was getting sore. So I pulled out my chrony and determined that I was pumping them out at 2700fps! Well I slowed them down next range trip. I'm hitting 2480ish and the thing is really shooting good. The tight chamber is the reason of the crazy velocity increase. All the old enfields were hogged out for mud in the trenches. I neglected to follow what everyone and I know, start low and work up when reloading.
To the op. That gun is a looker.

Ladder load testing has become a go to for me. It gets you firmly into the area you need ro dabble quickly. Saves barrels and supplies.

Working out well. Parts cost what they do but there seems to be a huge variance in the cost of having the work done. If you don't mind saying, how much was the gunsmith bill to spin on a new barrel, chamber etc and fit the new bolt? Would like to be able to compare to the Sask and BC prices I have for the work.
