Drive around till you find sign. Park, and use the shoe leather express. That's the public land option.

Private land requires permission.

Bring a toboggan, lotsa rope, and proper clothes and footwear(extra socks)

What made you pick those zones to hunt?

I saw the harvest report. There are a lot of elks when compared to other wmu's that do not require special permission. So thats why.

ive seen a few elk on the north side of the cutbank river on hwy 40 around the north weyerhauser.

usually see them at night when im driving a rig up or down the hill and they like to run out in front of me lol

Bring a shovel, chains and 4x4 is a must.

Best part about picking a new area is learning it.

There's already over a foot of snow in places, which means 95% of those units don't hold any elk. There's also a lot of work going on (leases and pipelines), a lot of it in prime winter range. So that leaves you 1 or 2% of the zone to hunt. Find it, hike in, and hope to see something legal.

Don't get your hopes up, their are lots of other guys traveling any trail a truck can go with the same hopes and dreams as yourself. Use this trip to get the lay of the land/ scouting trip for next year. Who knows you may just completely luck out and find one. good luck

Oh then in that case, what other wmu's would you recommend? Not asking for spots, just wmu's that in your opinion could hold elks?

I'm not saying there's no elk in there. It's just that you have a lot of land to search to find the few elk pockets worth hunting.

If you're really asking for other wmu, here's my best hunting advice:

Hunt as close to home as possible, scout the area year round, weekly. Learn the area and the habits of the game in the area. Do that, and you'll be successful year after year, even if the game density is low.

Winging it will not provide success over and over, but it can make for a good adventure.

I live in pretty good elk country. I haven’t seen a elk since the last week of sept. Are you setting up camp or what’s your plans?

It's about you finding your own way OP.

Go, try, succeed/fail, it doesn't really matter, what matters is the experience.

People holding your hand, giving you gps coordinates, or what ever, is just cheapening the experience.

Make a plan and excecute it.

I didn't realize those zones still had decent harvest stats. I havent looked in the last few years, but would guess that the havest parallels the population, which in my opinion is in decline. Anyways if your plan is to hunt those units than best of luck. The best part of hunting a new area is you never know whats around the next corner. Stick to the river valleys somewhat....

2 friends and I hunted 356 west of Hiway 40 and north of the Kakwa from '91 until 2001. Mostly hunted north of the Cutbank River off a pipeline. There were a few elk around in those days. We took a half dozen bulls, all north of the Cutbank. We took a few bull moose also in the calling season which was a draw back then. There were also a lot of mulies up there at that time.
We used to leave Hiway 40 on the Weyerhauser Haul road.

Just stay home, we don't need anymore hunters out here. It's slim pickings as is.



It's people like you that are/have ruined hunting in alberta.

The thing about public land, and all of the logal wildlife in this province is that they are for ALL Albertans to access and enjoy. Not just some grumpy locals who feel entitled - that's what private land is for.

I'd say its people with poor ****y attitudes like yours that are/have ruined hunting in Alberta.

I think the both of you guys above need to calm down pour yourselves a cup of coffee and enjoy the day. Get out hunting and enjoy the day and you will see that things are not that bad after all:angry3:

356 is ok.
Try two lakes road.
Then Lingrell road.
