New 22 sounding weird when fired

Hey guys/gals,

I bought a brand new Marlin Golden 39A lever rifle a couple of months ago, and I've noticed that there are certain brands of ammo (such as Mini-Mags and Rem Cyclones) that make a loud pop with my rifle, rather than the familiar crack sound of a 22LR. At first I thought it must be a bad batch, however, when my buddy tried the same batch and they sounded fine in his CZ American bolt. I've tried cleaning the barrel and the chamber where the round rests, but it still exists.

I am familiar of every gun having a "preference" of ammunition, however, i've never heard of ammo sounding weird when fired. I've asked a bunch of people who are more experienced with firearms than I am, and none of them have ever heard of this.

I have been told not to worry about how it sounds as long as it shoots okay. My gun shoot okay (using my iron sights). But I feel, how a gun sounds tells you if its functioning properly or not. Any ideas???

Thanks for your feedback

put in some earplugs so you can't hear anything!

Could simply be whether or not the round is super or sub-sonic in your particular barell. There is a different report for .22's if they break the sound barrier. Perhaps the ammo you used to use was subsonic? Just a thought.

wow, its great. With earplugs, i can't hear a thing. Thanks

I don't believe the ammo I was using was subsonic gibbs. The Mini-Mags, Winchester and Cyclones are all high velocity. The Federal Champions (which is a high velocity and which I currently use) sounds fine with my rifle. It probably has to do something with the rifling and length of my barrel

Doesn't the 39A have a really long barrel? I'd say you have used up all powder and it just sound different cuz of this extra length. If it shoots straight use em.

I'm voting on barrel length and thickness. If you measure distance from muzzle to the Ear from your other .22s you will notice that the 39A is probably the Longest.

yes you're probably right. Its a 24'' barrel.
