Spruce Ranching Co-op

Hey guys,

Anyone make it out to the Spruce Ranching Coop sign up day yesterday? I was not able to this year - but I am wondering if any of the rules have changed from previous years?

Thanks!

Sorry I can't help you out, was thinking of going but didn't work out.

Is it as crazy as I've heard where people are sleeping on access road night before?

Sako300 08-08-2019 08:42 AM

Yes that was the case in the last 2-3 years, this is the first year I haven't attended. The reason I ask is the access/hunting rules seem to change every year so was just wondering if any have changed this year for better or for worse.

Was trying to upload of a pic of the lineup but won’t seem to work... it was a **** show as per usual. Most guys seemed to have camped overnight, some from the previous morning. No rule changes other then I believe 2 more people allowed per day.

elkslayer132 08-08-2019 09:24 AM

Yes what a joke i was there near the front of line. This loser thinks he owns the whole coop while he is just an employee. You line up all night then when sign up begins the loser start taking calls on the phone taking reservations. That is BS. Most of the time around there during archery season they say it's all booked up but there are no vehicles any where so people must be flying in.

To be fair I don’t think that’s Joe’s fault... guys sign up for days taking 4-5 spots for their hunting partners, then don’t show up. If your not going to use your days give them a heads up. They have a waiting list and will call guys off of it if an opening occurs. As much as it’s a bit of a gong show I think we have it pretty good being able to choose days and not be put into a random lottery and get days you can’t even use.

Torkdiesel 08-08-2019 11:14 AM

So this is private land they charge you to access?

Why are guys sleeping on the road ?

elkslayer132 08-08-2019 11:19 AM

No this is grazing leases with stupid rules attached to it.

Very limited number of people per day for both season's. No retrieval of animals with quads. But for money the clown will retrieve for you.

buckman 08-10-2019 07:35 PM

I heard recently he charges for horse camp access.
I am not certain that's legal if its correct.

I'm guessing that's not legal

Where is this place? Usually elk causes this kind of drama.

Back in the day when the old ranch a few km back had not been burned down it was a great place to go. We would put our tent trailer behind that big old barn to keep it from blowing away and there were not that many hunters out.
Now too many hunters I do not know how the lease holders and ranchers manage with all those hunters.
Even though I have a quad I would not want to see guys on quads roaring around there.
Even though parts of the Castle are still open for hunting lots of guys do not go there for fear of getting caught in the wrong area.
It is a problem for both sides.

Sako300 08-10-2019 09:09 PM

I totally understand some of the rules that are in place - the place would be a zoo without limiting number of hunters per day. I also understand why they limit signup to just one day, if I was in their shoes I would only want to deal with it for a morning as well. What I don’t understand is why they have taken away the ability to do game retrieval utilizing existing ranch trails, whether personally or through ranch personell. Also, not sure why they have taken the ability to have a camp for a few days. Overall, I think the ranch has done a good job in creating a safe and organized environment - but lately it seems that the pendulum has swung too far and now the rules that have been put in place have become restrictive to access and enjoy the lease land. I as well can see it from both sides, and I would not want people driving quads all over the place to find animals. But at the same time i can’t wrap my head around not allowing someone to safely haul an animal out when you could easily be 10km back from the parking spot.

There are 4 different areas that are huntable with 32 sections of grazing leases. Many more people could use this area without any problems daily. This clown that runs it also tells me i cannot shoot wolves on any lease land. But if i get the chance the whole pack will be going down.

Torkdiesel 08-11-2019 10:15 AM

Hard to believe they can do that with a piece of crown land they hold a permit to graze animals on !

If there’s cows there I understand, after that point get facked!

AND THIS IS THE REASON^^^^^ that people are denied access to ranchers property.

If it’s in private land and the rancher says don’t shoot a certain animal that should definitely be honoured..you’re a guest.

On lease land if it’s legal to hunt an animal I don’t feel the lease owner has a right to make that request. They manage the land and now they manage hunter numbers not hunting.

elkslayer132 08-11-2019 11:17 AM

NO PRIVATE land at all. He has no right to say that to anyone he is just an employee of the coop.

It’s not his property! He holds a grazing permit, that’s all

elkslayer132 08-11-2019 12:06 PM

It's the coop that owns the leases he is just the manager and lives on the lease that's it. And it borders K country in a lot of area.
