Don't Buy Hanwags if you're looking for new boots

i received these brand new hanwag boots in august 2017 after one trip i had lugs falling off and chunking off in september i contacted them for warranty. they said
"that the chunks are coming of due to hydrolysis, this is the degradation of the sole and is purportedly accelerated if you don't wear your shoes regularly or that have been sitting in the box for a couple of years."
they were willing to replace them, so i sent them back.

today i'm told that they can't replace them with the same model and if i want a new model i need to pay around $300...

great boots i just bought...

BEWARE HANWAG!!!

I was thinking of getting Hanwag but I guess not. Seems like they might have sold you old stock. who knows. I would suggest resoling but then the uppers might also go on you.

calgarychef 11-09-2017 10:18 AM

Yup, seems like old stock doesn't it? That's not your fault and if you still have. The receipt they should stand by their product.

I love my hanwags
They don’t make the sole , it’s a vibram sole.
I’ve never seen anything like your pics. I put probably close to 1000 miles on my 1st pair, then I tried to fast dry them by a fire, it went bad.
I bet I’m close to 1000 on the 2nd pair, and they are holding up nice.
I would guess I’ll get another 1000 miles .

Suck when your the guy that gets a bad pair, but I’ve not seen very many bad reviews,

This is what mine look like & 1000miles would be the minimum they had on them.

Pretty much exact same thing happened to my friend. His were 300 and some dollars Zamberlan though. He went on a over 200 km backpacking trip and came back with no rubber on his boots 10 days later. They took it back in mec, however, and issued a full refund.

Edit: and I have the exact same model of Zamberlans bought a couple years prior and they are just great :)

Is sending them $300 for new boots your only option? What about a refund for an obviously defective product?

i just asked them to ship me the boots back. i'll order in new vibram soles and have them resoled at a local shoe repair place.

That'll cost you and I don't think that it should. That was your decision but given the option I would have looked for a refund.

I've seen tons of Military boots with Vibram soles and lots of miles on them. I've never seen anything like your boots especially in such a short period of time. If that was happening in the Military it would have sparked a total recall.

it was an online credit or the boots returned to me. using their online credit would have cost me quite a bit more additional money plus the $40 i spent to mail my defective boots to them (which i unfortunately already did).

it turned out to be cheaper to get my brand new boots resoled than to buy new ones.

it's the lesser of two evils

when you get your boots back make sure you give the leather a good treatment so that the boots do not shrink on you. That happened to me about 25 years ago. Put a pair of hanwags away in the basement for the winter and the next year they fit away to tight. That was before my old feet got wider. Tried to have them stretched but that did not work.I accept the blame in that case as I never treated the leather before I put them away.

Taiga 11-09-2017 11:45 AM

It makes no difference to me, but Hanwags really are an excellent boot, and as mentioned that is a sole issue (third party). The important thing is that the boots are comfortable and fit well, and I am guessing they do because that is one reason Hanwags are so well reviewed. Retailer should take care of you. I personally like the Hanwag alaskan wide model.

Edit: I read your first post again. Yes old stock, discontinued model apparently, retailer is dropping the ball here.

AvgCanadianJoe 11-09-2017 12:25 PM

Could be old stock, agree with that sentiment from some other posters.

That said, I have multiple boots with Vibram soles and have never seen this - some with a similar number of miles as some of the other posters in the thread. Makes me wonder if it isn't an issue with the batch of soles that Vibram produced :thinking-006:. Perhaps that is an angle to chase straight to Vibram?

Maybe you should rename the post..."don't buy old handwags"

i bought them in august this year brand new from a store.

they came in that box.

how could you ever know what's old or new?

i have seven year old scarpas that look very much like the day i bought them. and that's seven years old from the day i bought them. so maybe they're 40 years old already :snapoutofit:

Good afternoon,
Thank you for contacting us with your enquiry.
Here at Vibram Canada we only import and sell the already manufactured footwear made by Vibram itself, the Five Finger shoe, and the Furoshiki line. We are not involved with any of the partnered companies, and do not handle, distribute or manufacture and of the rubber products used to make soles for other brands.
You may contact Vibram USA and see if they could help you out through the re-sole program they run, but you would need to send the boots to the USA for repairs.
I would perhaps contact Hanwag again and see if they will honor warranty by offering you another boot of equal value.

Good luck
maybe hanwag usa will help

Pasc43 11-09-2017 02:23 PM

Love my Hanwags! Sorry to hear about your poor experience.

Bergerboy 11-09-2017 02:57 PM

OP
Maybe you will be able to find another boot that will compliment your man bun and beard while you are drinking your latte:sHa_sarcasticlol:

Pathfinder76 11-09-2017 02:57 PM

I would talk to someone else at Hanwag.

rangerstan 11-09-2017 07:15 PM

Love my Hanwags, had an issue with a pair once and the company replaced them. I would get in touch with their customer support line and see what can be done.

fish_e_o 11-10-2017 09:09 AM

i called hanwag canada today and they wouldn't let me talk to a manager.

Pathfinder76 11-10-2017 09:59 AM

I'd say send them a link to the thread here, but they are getting more good press than bad. I too have nothing but good to say about them.

petew 11-10-2017 11:47 AM

Are you wearing those in the shop? or walking on a lot of sharp rock / shale?

Two pairs of Hanwag Omega's here, love em! Know lots of Hanwag owners, no complaints from them either.

So they are offering $357 towards a new pair?

Arty 11-10-2017 12:38 PM

barking up the wrong tree

First of all, that's a high-volume molded sole boot, probably rebranded (i.e. the cheap stuff). My guess is they're not even re-soleable, sort of like buying a cheap car with tires & wheels factory-welded to the brake drums. Those are nothing like double-stitched Hanwag boots. A better title would be 'Dont buy molded sole boots for demanding use'.

High-end manufacturers of all products, from cars to boats to beer to electronics and boots, are always looking for ways to down-market some product lines when customers go for cheaper price points.

'Made in Croatia' - they possibly sourced a cheaper line of vibram soles which look like they are either fused to the boot during molding or maybe even created during the molding process.

Had a pair of Meindl boots once made the same way. One day the whole bottom just separated from the tops and I had to walk around like wearing a pair of flip-flop thongs until I found some duct tape. Tossed them like an empty BIC lighter before I got home.

Just take the hit, and then go for a good pair of double-stitched Hanwag or Viberg boots.
