Help! Looking for 9 person RV rental in Alberta?
 

Hey guys!

I have a family coming this summer and we decided to do Rockies roadtrip. We want to spend as much time together as we can so Im in search for an RV that can drive and sleep 4 adults + 2 teenagers and 3 kids. I tried to google it but somehow I came empty handed. Most of the rentals seem to be in the 4-6 people range.

We want to rent and drop off in Calgary or Edmonton at the end of July.

If someone can steer me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Also if you have any tips for RV roadtripping feel free to post. This will be a first for me so Im all ears.

My advice would be to rent two RV's and split up your group if it's hard to find a rental that fits all of you.

there are air bnb type rental companies available for trailers and rvs. Wheelestate.ca is one of the few.

We dont want to split, because we want spend as much time together as possible. They live in Israel so they dont come up here very often.

You may want to consider a tent for the youngsters. That's what we have done with grand kids. Can still sit under awning if raining etc.

You're gonna have a hard time finding a motorhome that can legally seat 9 while moving (not enough seatbelts). You might have to find a van and tow a trailer.

There are a few rental companies out ther, Canadream, Fraserway, Cruisecanada, wheelestate if you want to rent from a private person. or even some RV dealers rent out rv's I know Uncle Bens in Red Deer does.

How does one go about kids car seats in an RV?

They usually have the straps and brackets on the dining room chairs, or sometimes on a couch.

You may end up renting a big motorhome and a car or minivan to follow.

Took a trip to Alabama with eight guys. We rented a Prevost tour bus out of Nashville with a driver. It had a stateroom, living area and eight bunks. It was the typical bus that entertainers would use while on tour.

Big money. We still rented hotel rooms in most of the locations we stopped.

That is the only RV big enough to handle your crew.

You may be better off renting a 12 passenger raised roof van (ie Ford Transit/Mercedes Sprinter), and staying in a motel. This would allow for everyone to travel safely in relative comfort, and still have room for luggage. If you will be doing a trip through the mountains it will also be much more maneuverable. That coupled with the fact that you will never find a self propelled rv to fit that many people. If you are dead set on camping/everyone being together and not tenting it, and you have a capable tow vehicle, you may be able to rent a toy hauler. Many toy haulers sleep up to 10 people, but they are triple axle, 40 plus feet long and heavy. And you would not all be able to travel together in the tow vehicle.

Can you drive the van for 12 people with just a regular Class 5?

I dont mind tenting. My main thing is to keep us together while driving.

Yes, you can.

If you were to go this route and tenting, it may be worthwhile to also rent a small single axle cargo trailer (U-haul), to keep all of your camping supplies/luggage in. This way the van wouldn't be too cramped with cargo, and you would have fewer projectiles in the passenger compartment. Also it would nice to have an alternate place for cargo if it happens to rain during your camping trip, wet tents/coolers etc. not too fun to have in vehicle.

I saw a large multi-generational family from Saskatchewan do this once with a passenger van and a cargo trailer. It seemed to work well, and they were the only other family that we saw outside in the evenings around the campfire as the rest of the campers were inside their big holiday trailers/motor homes watching TV.

Was thinking the same thing. Overall probably less expensive than renting a monster motor home.

The only caveat is that you'd have to call ahead to make sure the van had a trailer tow package with brake control. I've seen them around, so shouldn't be too hard to find.

i'd go one further, as since he's talking about kids in child seats, I'd rent a smaller travel trailer (along with van) that can sleep 5-6 people, that way you have a bathroom/fridge with you all the time (for wife & kiddies), and you only have to setup tents for 50% of the people. Not to mention provides alot more storage for the 9 people.

keyword is "smaller" though, that way you will spend more time outside, and the trailer is still easily manueverable (sp?lol).

The only issue I see, is finding a rental company that will let you tow with their vehicle. There are some out there, just not all will allow it.
