Crankbait size for trout/walleye
 

I build crankbaits for larger predators for the most part ranging from 5-8inch usually. This winter I am working on some smaller crankbaits geared to trout/walleye. I have a habit of fishing with lures that most would say are big so I thought I would ask you guys what you like to use. I plan to carve a few over the winter to test once things thaw.

What size of crankbaits do you like for trout/walleye?

Feel free to add what your go to crankbaits are as well. I never duplicate other crankbaits but I do pay attention to shape and action style then adapt to my own style

i would say about one and a half inch baits are perfect size. They do eat my 2 inch plus baits. Just not as often and alot more hesitant. Based off the walleye sizes around edmonton.

Would you be able to take some videos and photos of how you do everything. I find it all so amusing.

I use 3 sizes: 3 inch, 4 inch, 5 inch.
More important is the depth the crankbait will run at if you are tolling.

I use 3-4 inch in spring time shallow runners which run 2-4 feet deep

June, July 4 inch, deep runner which run at 8 - 12 feet

August, September 5 inch deep runner which runs 14-20 feet deep

My preferred colours

1 Orange, 2 Gray, 3 Green or Yellow

We never use bait.

I thought this was an ice fishing lure. If we were trolling I would definitely run something larger. I catch them with two and a half inch plus lazy ikes.

You really go that small. I have never thrown a crankbait under 3 inches in my life. It might be tough to get my fingers to work something that small if it’s a minnow style body.

I lack the skills with video but I could probably take some pics. It would be better with a larger bait though

I have a large deep diver I have planned as well that might be a good option

Depth is no issue most of the time I design multiple baits for this reason.
