reloading 9mm for handgun vs rifle
 

Just wanted to get a few opinions on reloading for a 9mm rifle vs 9mm handgun. I couldn't`t find any info for rifle 9mm reloading. I tried using 9mm in the rifle from a handgun load. It seem to work find. I was thinking because of the longer barrel I may need a slower burning powder than what I use for the handgun.

I’m not sure that 9mm has the case capacity to utilize a much slower powder than the standard pistol loads, and even with factory ammo you generally see a significant increase in velocity out of a carbine barrel so It may not be all that beneficial anyway.

The longer barrel will give you more velocity anyway. I don’t make any changes to my load recipe.

I think your only issue would be the type of bullet you are seating. Some hollow points are not designed for the extra (100-200fps) velocity from the rifle barrel. You start to see uncontrolled deconstruction instead of uniform expansion. That said, depending on your target, you may not care. Zippy rounds and reactive targets are definitely in my bag of likes!

Is the rifle a blowback design ? Does the manual that came with it state that +P ammo is not to be used ?
If these are noted restrictions shoot pistol loads and be happy. If not and the chamber is fully supported there are different loads to try.

it is a blow back design and the manual doesn't`t say anything about what ammo to use. Thanks for the input guys.

9mm carbines are designed to use the same ammo as a pistol. They are not designed to take higher pressure just because they are a carbine. +P loads will be fine unless it specifically says not to use them but do NOT hot rod the hand loads above normal +P loading. The case and method of head-spacing is not conducive the hot loads.
