:D One more for ya an actual bear skinned and ribs cutout showing vitals...
shows good example why bears are lost with broadside shots that areslight high mid body...no mans land or much for vitals... http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/...ps938f59e0.jpg Neil |

alberta spring bear
when is spring bear season in Alberta? when is the best time to hunt ?

Wow.
Is the first pic. of a black with browns ? I had no idea they would do that. The pic. of the vitals was about the best I've seen so far, to get a good idea of where the heart and lungs really set in a bear. I've seen other pictures and see the difference in the foreleg bones but the other pictures were mostly drawings or propped up bears and I wasn't sure about the way things looked, just didn't quite seem natural. So I wasn't sure if the positions and angles were quite right. That picture you posted is much more convincing and gives me a lot more confidence on exactly where to aim on a bear. Thanks Neil. Yup that bear is propped up too, but is done well and appears much more what I would expect. Good find, helped me hope it helps others here too. |
All the Bears in the first picture are Black Bears. There are many colour variations among the species - not all are black. Alberta has quite the populations of colour phase bears including blondes!
All Alberta Hunting Seasons are listed in the regulations. This information is available for free in print as well as on the internet. Very fine pictures all around. I second the motion on the vitals image, fantastic! |

We only have blacks down here and even though the population is
really taking off, your hard pressed to see one, you can get tracks but they have a way of keeping away and you don't see them. (execept for fools that feed them). The numbers of bears have been growing enough in the last few years that even the fish&game has increased the bag limit and season length to help cull some. That's saying something right there. Didn't know blacks have blond version, have not seen or heard of any down here yet. |
Thanks for the pics! Behind the front leg and bottom 3rd is the place to be.

:D Yup...after Guiding for bear with bow for 30 some years the biggest issue aside from early Mecanical broadheads failing, [ mecanical heads were banned in many camps] was one lung shot bear from tree stands.
95% of bear baits are set up utilizing tree stands, many stands are far too high, making shot angle extreme at close ranges.. Shooters were aiming too low or too high at steep angles, a deadly shot on the ground but a deadly issue from stands as many bears are hit in one lung, a one lung shot bear can go a long ways and may never be found, or even survive. I showed and told my shooters to picture in their mind where the heart is located and to aim at the heart, a slight quaring away shot worked best with lung, live and main heart componants being taken out. On a lung shot the top of close side lung will take out bottom of oppisite lung for quick and humane take down...seconds IMHO A black bear, even the biggest, [I have personally taken four well over 500 lbs] are the easiest and quickest animal to take down with the bow on a good vital heart or double lung shot... literally over in seconds, several were done within 7 seconds of release of arrow to stone cold done. I have never taken a bear with a rifle but seen many and to this day IMHO think a bow takes down a bear much faster hit in the same vitals. Neil |
That's one heck of a skinning job.
Nice work Neil. Fantastic teaching tool. But how did you get that thing to stand up in such a perfect pose? |
Awesome pics, thanks!

thanks for posting some neat pics, esp. the one showing vitals.

grew up in northern alberta (high level area) having to deal with black bears coming into our yard and since getting into bow hunting never really thought too much about hunting them with a bow....until now (your post Neil), man I think it would be an adrenalin rush like no other! Thanks for the great post and pics....now my bow hunting is quickly broadening as with a new learning curve :-)
