CFR in Red Deer

Looks like the big announcement Tuesday will bring the CFR to Red Deer!! There is an article in the Red Deer News.

It's too bad City Of Edmonton didn't think it had any benefit to the city.
What the heck does a "Western Lyfestyle Festival" mean anyway? Especially one that doesn't include Rodeo!!!

I think Red Deer will do a great job, although prize money might take a bit of a hit, and there probably won't be hardly any media coverage on MSM when CFR is on.

I think there's enough hotels in Red Deer to pull it off.

It's too bad, but good for Red Deer for stepping up!!

Edmonton will regret tearing down Northlands, and not fighting to keep the CFR. Who will attend Farmfair now? Hopefully they will relocate to Red Deer as well, and Edmonton will have lost all the millions that poured into the city every November. Rogers was not designed to effectively host livestock events... at the PBR event that ran concurrently with the CFR, all the bulls were hauled from Ponoka daily. Brilliant. And to agree to tear down a perfectly good venue as part of the Roger's Coliseum contract has to rank as one of the dumbest ideas ever made by a city council. Hopefully Red Deer can handle it, but the Centrium capacity is much smaller...7819 if they use the floor, which obviously they cannot for a rodeo!

What does it cost to keep the old coliseum standing outside of the week CFR is in town? These venues require well over 100, maybe 150+ booked dates annually to be cost effective.

I don't want any of my tax money going towards keeping it open and I sure as heck don't want one penny to go towards the Northlands management group. They couldn't organize a sock drawer unless there was taxpayer funds (losses) involved.

Blow it up.

The mayor sees no benefit to keeping an event that brings in close to $100m of revenue for the city. Those red deer truck dealerships will love the relocation of the cfr too. Big win for red deer. Big loss for redmonton.

Bunch of city slickers, more interested in an arts and cultural centre than our western heritage, good for Red Deer!

TUFFBUFF 01-13-2018 12:16 PM

Be interesting to see if they can pull it off, bound to be lots of growing pains.
I'm not sure of venue site as only been to the westerner grounds but Edm seems busy at Cfr time.
I suppose if you toss out all the farmfair stuff and trade show and cityites and just have the rodeo might be doable but won't be the venue it once was. We go most years and was a good weekend, have couple places to stay with family and shop, visit, out for dinner, and some farmfair events, rodeo etc.
Can't see myself going to red deer just for the rodeo unless the kid makes it.

Waiting for the announcement.

It will be a huge boost for Red Deer, Red Deer already hosts the Agri Trade which is a huge event. It is a perfect fit.

Exactly ^^

I am happy Red Deer got it though. The CFR board got VERY VERY greedy in their demands. Cowboys will be the ones who lose out in the end on prize $$$.

I don't know if that is 100% accurate, but the 2nd thought is unfortunately spot on.

lead chucker 01-13-2018 07:17 PM

Jasper is going to lose their rodeo after this year also

mistermoosealberta 01-14-2018 08:54 AM

Along with the main event in the Red Deer proposal there was an addition event each August called Rising Stars of Rodeo, which will promote up and coming rodeo talent.

The official announcement will be 5:30 on Tuesday.

Between the CFR board and Katz Management Group I'm sure there'd be some sort of ego contest. The new arena probably wouldn't have been an optimal venue anyways BUT, it'll be interesting to see how RD handles the accommodations requests. I predict a need for several new RV parking lots and lodging availabilities to be zero from Olds to Ponoka.

Hun-Ter 01-14-2018 01:23 PM

No worries! Edmonton will make up the lost revenue in photo radar and paid parking lots..

trimman99 01-14-2018 04:49 PM

buy buy Edmonton, very bad choice

Moving the CFR to Red Deer will be great for Red Deer, bad for the CFR, and it won’t mean a lick to Edmonton.

The CFR will bring more people to Red Deer, and fill the city for a week.

There aren’t enough seats in the stands, or corporate backing to really prop up the rodeo. But they really have no other option. Saskatoon fell through. Calgary doesn’t want it. Vancouver would be a PETA nightmare. I think at this point they should be happy just to have a place that would take them.

And Edmonton has a PBR, at the same time as Farm Fair I believe, which is all people really want anyway.

Not for Edmonton really. The CFR yep.

hayseed 01-14-2018 05:56 PM

I think it's fantastic!!
We can handle it, be a bumpy ride but think about it.

10 yrs and the CFR.

Just what the City of Reddeer needs.

Let's keep it civil, throw out some pros an cons if you will.

mac1983 01-14-2018 06:18 PM

racetrack?

Is there room? Or to close to Lacomb and Ponoka? Would love to see another track in Alberta, not sure if there are enough horses for it.

purgatory.sv 01-14-2018 06:28 PM

When you ask racetrack are you referring to the harness and thoroughbred?

They do pony chucks in Red deer, track at Lacombe that has been dormant for a bit...

mac1983 01-14-2018 06:42 PM

Heck you may as well throw in the Indian horse race which is pretty cool.

lead chucker 01-14-2018 06:45 PM

I hope farm fair moves to RD as well.to he'll with Edmonton

I thought the harness and thoroughbred were separate from the cfr?
I will be happy with the finals staying in alberta .

Yep, separate deal. Just hoping we can get some action in alberta horse racing and maybe it will help with the CFR in Red Deer.

Assuming this will be the building the rodeo takes place in.....isn’t this about 10k less seats than Edmonton?

If red deer had an international airport, it may do better. Lots of foreigners come to the CFR.
