Sight in help needed

A buddy of mine is interested in archery. I still have my old bow so we set it up for him. When he shot, he shot left. Ok, no problem, move the sight left. Keep going the same way and now we have maxed the sight all the way over and he's still shooting to the left. About 4" at 20 yards.
The arrow sits in the rest square to the bow, right over the riser, coming out straight with the stabilizer. The only thing that has changed from me shooing it to him is moving the sight left by almost an inch.

I know I'm missing something in this, I am thinking it's more technique based than equipment but he's shooting with decent form, an open hand, straight shoulders, etc.

Are there any tips without pictures that you can give?

Is he left handed?

I'm a south paw and when I snap the release i consistently shoot left.

I'm going to guess it's a shooting form issue.

Also, does he have the same draw length to you? If not, that will cause form issues.
Might want to tell him to take the bow to your local pro shop to get fitted.

Also, shameless plug time- we're recording a podcast episode tonight on this very subject. Should be available to download in a couple of days.

Cheers.

He is right handed. We changed his draw length to what he was fitted for.

Is the site mounted level? Is he watching the level when he shoots?

Check the grip, is it to tight and torquing the bow? Overextended elbow?

Check for facial pressure, is his face pressing against the string?

Do you have the correct spine arrows for the bow?

Try moving the rest to the right a bit.

His DL may be too long, make sure to double check it.

Is he left eye dominate?

Lastly make sure he is following through on the shot and not peeking early.

Which sight are you using
Some sights have a block where the sight window attaches to the arm. The Spot hogg hunter has this. Remove sight window off and place the spacer block on the left side of arm and put screws through and bolt on your sight window.
should give enough room.

Open hand, closed hand, it doesn't matter. Consistently to the left. At 20 yards the level means next to nothing but yes, it is. It's my old bow and I shot 60 yards no problems. All we did was change the draw length and start sighting in for him. Elbow has a slight bend. Spine is good. Moved the sight to the right and he was shooting the target paper o the left of his. Right eye dominant for sure.

Sight has no sight blocks. It's a Trophy Ridge areact sight. The only way to get it over far enough would be to mount it on the opposite side of the riser but that's not a very good option.

I told him to head in to a good pro shop to ask for some help. Unfortunately where we were today is great for lanes but I haven't had much luck for service or help there.

I'm just stumped as to what to do next.

Pasc43 08-22-2017 05:45 PM

What kind of bow? Something must have happened when you were changing draw length. Cam lean, or timing off? Other than that move the rest to the right or go get him shooting help.

Scottmisfits 08-22-2017 05:51 PM

We put it back to my draw weight and I could get it shooting fine again so it must be something with his form and that's above me.

Simple fix - get him to change his head position and get him to get his anchor point closer in line be with his eye
Basically his right hand is too far to the right on anchor:)

I think this is probably true.
Might have something to do with a discomfort bringing the string close to the face if he's new to archery. I shoot with the string touching the corner of my mouth and tip of my nose. If he's holding it way right of that then maybe Cat is bang on. Wouldn't take much either. Just having a wider jaw could affect that
Good luck

go to CAC when Brian's there

Brian Struthers works part time at CAC in Calgary. He's an older guy who's been involved in every aspect of archery/bow hunting for going on 3 decades.
He works evenings. Maybe call ahead.
If its a fit issue, he'll find it.
If its form he will watch him shoot and let your friend know.

We sat down with Brian last night and recorded for about an hour.
Cheers
John

Thanks for the help guys. I think Cat just may be the closest but if you are, it's very small and I'm missing it.
I should have taken some pictures or video to help look at things.

Do you mean draw length or draw weight? If weight than definitely a spine issue.

Maybe I missed it, but have you increased the draw weight for him, or just changed the draw length? If you have changed the draw weight, but are using the same arrows, it might be a spine reaction from the arrow.

Scottmisfits 08-23-2017 08:35 AM

We set it back up for me is what I meant.

Scottmisfits 08-23-2017 08:38 AM

The arrows are borderline with his length and weight but they are the right arrows.

Either way, he is going in to a pro shop with people who are better than I am with this stuff. I can shoot, I can set up my bows, I taught my wife and my son how to shoot. I just can't get him figured out so get help from the pro's.

Another thing in relation to the arrow spine. If you changed draw length you also likely changed the draw weight, even without turning the limbs.
Based on what you have said, my guess is arrow spine reaction is a very likely reason.

catnthehat 08-23-2017 12:23 PM

My money is on a form issue not equipment - I saw the same thing far too many times when I coached .:thinking-006:

That's where I suggested he go. They haven't done wrong by me yet, nor do I expect them too

I think so too. I just can't nail it down. Hopefully the guys at Jimbows will be able to sort it out.

Battle Rat 08-23-2017 09:26 PM

Most likely for s experiment with that.
I did have one APA bow that left for me and right for others.
If I shot their bows I was bang on.
Never could figure it out and wound up moving the sight mount to the left side of the riser.
My new APA of course has similar riser and grip but I am no where near max on windage left.

madball 08-24-2017 11:10 AM

I used to shoot left a lot and it came from bad follow through and trying to see the arrow in target after the shot too quickly.

Yup peaking as we call it, hold your form till you hear the arrow hit the target and focus on pulling through the shot.
