Tenkara - Edmonton

Sorry, know it’s not a popular topic in this neck of the woods. Please, not interested in any sarcastic comments.

I recently got a rod and want to learn for very specific scenarios, like small mountain streams.

Wondering if anyone in Edmonton can assist me with casting in the spring? I have tried a few times and my casts are not as graceful as the videos I have watched. I am invested in practicing, but don’t want to develop any initial bad habits.

Thanks!
Jason

Konichiawa young son, first of all this is basic Ukrainian fly fishing without a reel. Go in the backyard and learn how to cast with or without a reel. From their you will gain true ninja fishing power.

Ask question on Northern Lights Fly Fishers Web site the're several members that are avid tenkara fishers.
Come out to a Wed meeting and convince our programs guy to have a Wed meeting on Tenkara fishing.
Good luck

I've been doing this a while and I still think my casts are not as graceful as the guys I see on videos. I have bad habits I'm sure. So, you're not alone.

As for learning to casts, as others have said, practice, practice and practice. I started with a course through Continuing Education. A guy from the Fishin' Hole was teaching it. Now, you have way more books and youtube. But it will come down to practice. I don't golf much but this is where the two sports share a similarity, both the golfer and flyfisher will always be trying to improve their stroke.

On learning small streams, just get the heck out there and go for it. Learn on the fly. You will be amazed. Before long, others may be coming to you for advice. Trust me on that.

I'm sure my neighbours think I'm crazy. I go out in the yard and lay out a 5 gallon pail lid on the grass and then practice casting to hit it. Once I can do it consistently I will reposition it so the wind is in a different direction, or I need to cast side arm around a tree, or control my backcast so I don't hang up on something. You can start with something larger (like a hula hoop) and then step it smaller as you gain confidence. The ultimate goal is to be able to accurately cast to specific spots no matter where the wind is, or what is around you.

Plus, it's a good way to spend some time out of the house on a nice spring day when you don't have quite enough time to hit a river or lake.
