went to Mulhurst bay at around 11:00 today and saw no whites, walleye or jack, caught one small perch. Went to Ma-me-o around 2:30 and saw 3 whites but no takers, caught one decent walleye and my biggest pike to date, weighed in at a shade over 17 lbs and 39 1/2 inches(100 cm exactly) which took awile to get up through the hole. Will post a pic if I can ever figure out how.Also lost another good jack at the hole
Mulhurst is not bad driving but Ma-me-o requires 4 x 4.
I would love to get some whites if anybody could point me to a hot spot.

been around the lake my friend...if you can nab 3 whites thee days out there you've got a hot spot!!

have you tried at the provincal park off the boat launch?

although i was out today...saw only a couple whited, no bites....but i did land a 21' walleye on the tip-up! my first wally and i didn't have a camera!

Out to Pigeon again tomorrow with a buddy to try for some whites. starting at Ma-me-o but may try and get over to the park if slow there. will let you know how it goes. If all else fails we will have homemade perogies and deer sausage fried up on the ice. YUMMY !!
PS. cooked up half that big jack for supper tonight and 4 of us couldn't eat it all

17 lb. pike for shore lunch. So much for keeping the spawners in the lake. :sick:

I really dont see a problem with somebody keeping a legal fish. If you have a problem with it bring it up with the people who make the rules not the people that follow them.

the way I see it...were all P'd off at the Metis for shooting trophy animals for food. So what is the difference between a trophy fish and a trophy ram. Why not take the smaller ones. (legal of course)?

I hate to see big spawners die but I agree with Pilsner man (can't believe I agree with anyone who likes pilsner:lol: ) If Alta would go to slot limits and quit the crap that only allows keeping spawners it would help. Don't condem anyone for doing what is legal or ethical for them. I feel no different on the Metis issue its the law that does'nt work if its legal then thats the end of discussion is'nt it?

I understand legality but how about morality? Pigeon Lake or any lake in central alberta is under major pressure as is, if we keep taking all the spawners...?

I have heard in the past that as evening comes on the whites move up into the shallows and start to feed abit more aggressivly. A particularly good spot is strait off the beach at the P.P. where is goes from about 10-12 ft all the way up to about 4 ft.

where is the drop point? how far out from the beach? would be nice to set up near the drop and maybe catch em on they're way in! in he late aft!

so some of you are complaining about me keeping a big jack, well for starters it's legal so it's okay, also it's the first jack i've kept in 3 years and I fish alot so I hope I never see those complaining keep any jack, or walleye,or whites or or any fish as they all have a roll in the reproductive chain, regardless of size, if not now in a few years.
give the morality police a rest, thats why we have rules for wildlife and I and many others follow them to the letter. Keep you personal beliefs PERSONAL please.
By the way went out to ma-me -o today and caught 5 jack, 1 legal, C & R !!
and 2 whitefish, kept em both

I didn't say it was "BAD" to keep a fish. Just doesn't make alot of sense keeping the 17lber. for the table. But your right it is legal.

I must disagree..., as long as there are regulations and they are followed it should be all good, there are people in the fish and wildlife commision that debate, plan and set the rules, right ?? 17 LBS jack that means more food on the table but I must agree that the smaller ones taste better....
I wanted to ask , the smaller jacks, don't they spawn as well ????

and myself I love jack fry fish, to me it's almost the same as walleye fry...:)

the drop off is about 75-80 yards off the boat launch(provincal park) drops from 6 feet to 20 feet of water real quick been a while so i might be off a little

Normaly smaller pike are males and the large pike are the females
So those larger hogs are the females

On another thread on this board a member posted a couple pics of some porkies he had legaly shot. Almost everyone is giving him a pat on the back for getting a couple good for nothing animals. Now a guy keeps a legal fish and everyone is jumping on his back. Just for my information what LEGAL fish or animal would it be OK to keep?

Reeves, I read the post you put up and I am confused. In the post it says the fish was released and basically backs up BBs view. You sure you actually read it or maybe misread it? Not picking on you, just confused why it was posted here.

I guess we can end this little s### storm as someone mentioned now. It seems I may not be a cold hearted, unethical fisherman as I am not the only one who likes to keep a LEGAL fish occasionally, be it just over legal as bear ballz does once in a blue moon or every trip out as long as you don't have more than your daily limit in your freezer, as per the regulations. Thats why we have regs, minimum sizes etc.
Anyway Bear, to show no hard feelings let me know when you are going out next and I will gladly share my thermos of coffee and a big hunk of deer sausage with you

I agree with Bear Ballz, killing a trophy pike, walleye, etc in this province may very well be legal, but it is probably going to be detremental to the fishery.For those of you who say the F/W have implemented the keep limits so it must be okay, take a look at the restrictions that are now in place because of the F/W mis-management of our fishery. You can not ignore the facts. Keep limits for walleye and pike in a majority of lakes are now zero because large keep limits (by sport and commercial anglers) were left in place far too long and restocking programs were terminated. The SRD agrees that walleye have been the most popular game species in this province for years but terminated all walleye stocking from 1999-to 2006, and now only stock 2 lakes per year, is this good management. I will agree some of the walleye fisheries are rebounding, but did you know that some of these lakes have had a zero limit for 10 years and some for 13 years. Is it good management to let a lake decline to such a level that it takes 10-13 years for it to recover? I belonged to a fishing club in 1988 that started lobbying F/W to start reducing walleye limits (they were 10/day then) because we could see as well as a lot of others what was happening, we were totally ignored.
At a public forum approx 12-15 years ago I believe, when F/W was introducing there plan for implementing catch and release for walleye on a large number of lakes in the province, a regular member of this board stood up and asked what sort of restrictions were they going to implement for pike. The Rep for the government at the time said "well no restrictions" we have more pike in this province than we know what to do with. The member then asked "well what do you think is going to happen when people cant keep walleye, do you not think they are going to keep pike instead. This comment was ignored, and well you all know what happened to the pike population over the next few years.
I will agree that F/W has done some good things with our fishery. The main point I am trying to make is be very carefull with putting your faith in the fishery management decisions that are being made, history has proven that some of these decisions probably put some of our fisheries back 15 years, and some may never recover. Let me be very clear, I am not questioning the decisions that our biologists,techs and F/W officers make but the decisions there bosses have made and are making now.

Anglers are extremely efficeint today, with sonars, super lines, GPS, trolling motors etc., compared to 15 or even 10 years ago. With the increasing population in this province and the skill and knowledge anglers have achieved, I believe also comes the responsiblity to adopt a catch and release philosophy ourselves, regardless of what the law allows. You may disagree with the release part of fishing, but if we do not start releasing more fish in a few years the "catch" part of the option for some species may no longer be there.

Bobalong, I actually agree with much of what you say. I also said I like to keep a legal fish occasionally. In my previous thread I stated it was the first pike i've kept in three years. considering I have probably caught a couple hundred pike in the last three years i think I would be a poster boy for "catch and release", agree?
Bear ballz, in regard to your PM I wasn't implying ANYTHING with the freezer comment other than what is legal. I was however offering an olive branch with the coffee and sausage comment. Still being offered !!!!!!
