That's a beauty of a brookie, nice catch!

SNAPFisher 01-16-2017 01:43 PM

Nice work Speck!
I caught a very similar looking and sized one about 5 yrs ago. Do you know how long ago the stocking ended for brookies there? Just wondering if there is the potential that this fish is from the last stocking and was not naturally reproduced. Typically the brookies were sterile when stocked but it depends how long ago.

around 2000 then 3 years nothing but Cutthroats but was closed to fishing

then Nov 1 too Dec 15 was a bait only time too get the Brook trout spawning

now that is closed to use any bait

if you need/want more info call 310-0000 and ask for Mike Blackburn or Ryan fisheries Bio's Edson office

There is a limited population there that is spawning. I have caught a few every year in the past 7 years. Spawning habitat is limited but thankfully there is some.

RavYak 01-16-2017 02:41 PM

Yeah still a few in there but not many, definitely reproducing cause they havent been stocked in quite a while. I have only caught 2 in at least half a dozen trips.

Cool, thanks. Given that the average is up to 7 years and the oldest known strain was up to 15 years...no doubt about the spawning. And, others here seem to agree it is happening. Always a nice surprise for sure :)

McLeod 01-16-2017 03:05 PM

Of course there is a little river a few kilometers away with thousands of Brookies but its closed to fishing. Okay I will leave that one alone...
but...
Thanks for sharing David ! By the way your looking good ! New shades ?

morinj 01-16-2017 03:18 PM

I believe that it is listed in the regs that Muskiki does have brookies!! I believe you are even allowed to keep 5, as af&w want to eradicate the species from that lake, o certainly could be wrong tho!

McLeod 01-16-2017 03:22 PM

It doesn't list Brookes specifically but yes you can keep 5. I am sure they would prefer you eat them but each to there own.

RavYak 01-16-2017 06:38 PM

Just looked it up and 2004 was the last year brookies were stocked. I am sure the ones I caught weren't 13 years old though.

coachman 01-16-2017 09:53 PM

I had a 6" try to take the hook so they are still spawning. A little bit small then this years cuts. They are going to be around for a few more years.

Dragless 01-16-2017 10:04 PM

Do you guys think there using the outlet stream or an underwater spring or the springs that trickle down the hills for spawning habitat?

Speckle55 01-17-2017 12:45 AM

we used too catch them on the rocks up front and down the right side

Smallboy's and Roan's would know & Bio"s maybe

thank you on my looking good... need a hip soon and on my glasses ... 5 different shapes... even superman glasses ;;;;

David:)
