All quiet on the elk front

Elk are pretty quiet up North this last week. Anyone else hearing anything?

Big Grey Wolf 09-16-2018 02:38 PM

They are probably soaking wet standing under spruce tree just shivering, complaining about the weather, not even thinking about sex.

Suzukisam 09-16-2018 03:51 PM

They are stuck in the mud

harv3589 09-16-2018 04:34 PM

Gone quiet where I hunt too...

sinawalli 09-16-2018 07:26 PM

Saw several cows and heard a bugle north of Hinton this weekend

kw12 09-16-2018 07:48 PM

Pretty quite up in 523

gazin16 09-16-2018 08:21 PM

Going hard yesterday morning in the wind and rain in central ab.

husky7mm 09-16-2018 08:32 PM

On fire south of GP and in the saddle hills. I hear them bugling all day long....

Coho911 09-16-2018 09:34 PM

Quiet where we hunt as well. we even tracked a tiny group down and test called on them - they were silent and but looked for a bit, then just walked off quiet. When the 5 point bull popped up moments after - we called on him with Mews and as he left a challenge bugle and he just moved along with the group as well.

No rut yet.

marlin4570 09-16-2018 11:27 PM

Been out everyday since August 25th, they fire up for a day or two then nothing. Been covering a couple hundred km a day between a couple of us (8) and nothing since the weather went to ****.

HuntingAlberta 09-17-2018 07:39 AM

Nothing here either. Camera's are still picking up bachelor herds of bulls and no cows. Quiet and little to no daytime movement.

johnnyfly 09-17-2018 07:51 AM

We had one going pretty good on Sat, but super quiet on Sunday??? Hearing lots of guys saying that the 19th+- it the peak of the rut?? Saturday was the first day we got a response....we are down in 305....what are your thoughts?

They are bugling here and there, but were a bit more active about a week ago. We went out the day before yesterday in Three Creeks area, or not far anyway, and it was quite and not just for elk, but also deer. We saw a group of three female whitetails (one was giant, I have never seen such a big doe) and that is it. Even the few fields we checked on the way out of the bush were empty, which is very unusual; I think, this is the first time I actually saw those fields with no wildlife on them at dusk time (except for the winter months).

Across the river, 4 or so days ago, I called in an average 5x5 meat-perfect bull out to approximately 30 feet from me, but the shooter was expecting him a bit further behind light bush cover and he never even saw him. There was at least one more bull who responded a couple of times.

Having said that, about a week ago, they were, I would not say waaaay more, but definitely more vocal. I called in a few just for fun 1-1.5 weeks back in the no hunting land.

If my memory serves me right, last year they very screaming all over the place just about now or plus a few days to a week and it went on to the early October. On this day last season my cousin called in a very nice bull, put a gun to his head and shot him, pretty much literally (in 522). My buddy got his on the 18th (in 523). I shot my cow on October 13 and they were still going strong (in 523). I can't recall the exact days they were the most vocal though, but if had to bet, I would on about a week from now and went on for a couple of weeks.

My cousin has been out since the morning trying to get her done in 523 and I haven't heard from him yet (I am supposed to go help him packing out if he gets one), so I am assuming there was no elk yet.

wildwoods 09-17-2018 06:06 PM

Going hard west of slave lake. Came very close to arrowing my first archery bull. There's always next year. Bugling till mid morning where I was hunting. Rutting bliss. Weather did not play a factor in movements. They were out there rain or shine according to my cameras and what I witnessed.

Just got off the phone with him and he said not a sound all day.

Pretty sure the behaviour changed after the snowfall, and after the second one they went almost mute.

robson3954 09-17-2018 08:50 PM

Lots of chat down south today. Busted by cows at 70yards. Thought they were further away.

Ya we were out today close to DMI and had a small bull coming around but still awfully quite but got 6 more days here so hopefully gonna find them!

trooper 09-17-2018 10:37 PM

Bugling like crazy at Elk island..

Big Grey Wolf 09-18-2018 10:07 AM

Guys, when herd bull has bunch of cows and no satellite bulls around he is to busy getting the job done. How many times late Saturday night when you were occupied with your girl friend did you yell "stay away" to your buddies.

crblair 09-18-2018 09:21 PM

Heading out around Wainwright this weekend. Will report back on my findings out that way

6 (now 5) days should be plenty if you know where to look, but it sounds like you do if you see/hear elk moving around :)

Good luck!

Not a sound from elk just north of hinton in 352 & 344. 4 of us calling in different locations since monday and not a peep. Tripping over the mule deer though.

Bassett 09-20-2018 02:49 PM

Lots of bugles first thing or right at night. Call shy mid day. Seeings lots but even the bulls I see rounding cows aren’t making a peep.

daveyn 09-20-2018 06:41 PM

out for 4 days in 429 this week, weather was horrible, rain, snow, heavy mist, fog so you couldn't see, bino's and spotters kind of useless in the fog. Heard nothing and saw nothing. Doesnt mean they weren't there, just that I didn't see or hear them.

Pony 09-20-2018 08:52 PM

There wild out in 410 bow zone, either it’s elk or the other 70 hunters around me in within a 1/4 mile, lol

Been out in 408 all week and not a peep. Anyone willing to offer advice on where they may be? Feet are killing me from all the miles I’ve put on so far...

Know of 3 elk shot in my area over the past few days, one being mine. Came in silent but came in fast.

Wiz 09-21-2018 05:56 PM

Saw two 6x6 on the side of the road at 5am today on my into the Bush, and a good size 6x6 bull with a small herd... he was not into my cow calls at all and quickly gathered his harem up and got the f outta dodge. I even had a Montana decoy setup too. Wind was in my favor... not sure what went wrong. Maybe he was spent. A male can only deal with so many females I guess.
