I finally caught something worthy of posting

Finally... my illusive unicorn.. I know there are much bigger out there, but for southern Alberta, for me this is something I'm proud of!

Please don't ask me where, lets just say its within 2 hours of Calgary.

I didn't have a scale or tape measure.. so no idea on the weight and length.. it was heavy tho. I'm 5'10, 200lbs for reference.

It took me a good 10 minutes to finally get her onto the boat.. using a Quantum Smoke PT bait caster with 20# Spiderwire Invisibraid.

Awesome congrats!

Solid fish, you can really appreciate its age due to the red tips on the fins.

In my experience only the biggest & oldest fish in a certain system develop those red fin tips. Solid brooding stock and I hope she made it back into the water for another spawn!

Great job man the huge smile says it all!

Slayer33 08-22-2017 03:10 PM

Thanks everyone. It was and is still the best feeling to be privileged to have caught something big for once. And definitely she was put back into the water hopefully to be caught again next year a few pounds heavier!

Red fins have nothing to do with the age of the pike. Red fins are a sign of a tough fight where the chemistry changes the amount of O2 and acid in the blood of the fish, the same way a someone exercising strenuously may get red - for precisely the same reasons.

Obviously the bigger the fish, the longer and tougher a fight may be - that's why you may associate this with a bigger (and older) pike. That pike will recover and the fins will return to a normal hue.

No tape measure or weight recorded for that beauty. It is big and that's enough!

Darren N 08-22-2017 03:44 PM

Nice!

What a beauty. Guess in the wild: Keho Lake? Big ones are known to come outta there.

Kings 08-22-2017 08:47 PM

Nice pike. Congratulations. My guess is about 22 to 24lbs.

Hmmm... a replica mount would be great.. I've never had one done, how does one go about getting one?
