Update - Dickson Trout Pond & Mr. Sucks
My 3rd trip to Dickson Trout Pond in the past 2 weeks, today I walked out, sat on a pail, sunny +7C no wind, surface ice/snow was mushy, holes were open, no need for an auger, fished for approx. 4 hours caught 9 and kept 4 to use later in the year & 0 Rainbows..
They really like frozen shrimp on a small jig & also were hitting pink shrimp smelly marshmallows off the bottom with slip bobber. Combined total = 17 Mr. Sucks & 0 Rainbows. I'm thinking there's a lack of oxygen in this pond & the bows are concentrated someplace trying to survive, at least I'm hoping that's the reason. A few Pic's ... they're bite size approx 12" length or less. http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/public...default/hi.gif Z-Z From the 1st trip, they were all over in 6 FOW: http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/...psaf037571.jpg http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/...ps33eb2446.jpg http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/...psa12b15d1.jpg Decided to keep 4 today, remainder got sent back. http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1bf6ae45.jpg |

LOOKS like a Good day On the water! Only Got Out a few Times This year. But Anytime Out Is better than Being in the City!!

Not to jack your thread but do you think I could go to my local winter killed trout pond where there are 12 inch suckers most years and catch suckers to pass the time before the pond gets stocked, because I'm guessing they are really difficult to winterkill??

In reply to others ... yup, for sure some great Laker & Pike treats in the deep freeze. http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/public...default/hi.gif Z-Z |
I once asked the biologist. oh, yes, Mr. suck is harder than any other species meaning if Mr. suck were dead, no other fish left.

Sad news ... yesterday on the way home from an unsuccessful fishin trip on the Clearwater River near Caroline, Bwackwabbit & I stopped at the Dickson Trout Pond to have a look at the ice conditions, we seen a large number of dead Mr. Sucks including a few dead Rainbows around the shore line.
Hope their not all lost to the harsh winter. http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/public...default/hi.gif Z-Z |

In reply ....
If you took a running leap and could jump 10 - 12 feet you would be dry when you land on the ice, 1 week ago there was 26" & quite solid, so little has changed. I found a tree limb & was busting through a thin crust of ice near shore to expose more dead fish. By the boat launch you could see them floating belly up & the crows were picked them apart. Never been to Clearwater before, we fished by the Trading Post, there's lots of open water with 24" thick ice packs that we were walking on to get up river. We fished for a couple of hours with no success, then came back to the bridge/vehicles for lunch, after lunch I spotted two large trout parked in a deep pool near the bridge, 5 of us spent 1.5 hrs & tried every trick in the book, we gave up on them & departed. I understand one of the other guys got a nice Bull. http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/public...default/hi.gif Z-Z |
i just went on a cruise to check out a favorite lake/pond i fish and was surprised to find a simular result. about 15 feet of open water close to shore and there were a bunch of dead fish and some struggling to breath including minnows. but the gulls were having a hayday buffet. the colour of the water was a dark coffee shade.
