How to cook.....ugh..... tie crystal meth PART 1
 

Alright it seems like there's some interest in the Crystal Meth fly pattern.

This is how I tie mine. I was shown how to tie single strand on a straight nymph hook, but I tie this way.

Hook: TMC 2457 size 8-20
Thread: Uni thread Red 6/0 and 8/0 for the smaller 16-20 hooks
Body: Diamond Braid

This is what you need

Next you'll want to cut two lengths of diamond braid roughly 6 inches long.

Singe the ends with a lighter to prevent fraying while tying.

Now place one length next to the other and fold over like so,

Put aside and place hook into vice and tie the thread to just past the bend of the hook and bring back to where the point of the barb was. Like so,

Take the diamond braid and pinch a little loop and tie off where you left the thread.

Lift the diamond braid and bring the thread 5 wraps forward.

Now you'll want to pull the strands forward and stroke them a bit to get proper position for the next loops.

Pinch down and make 3 wraps to tighten down the strands of diamond braid.

Part 2
 

Continue to form loops towards the eye of the hook. Make the loops progressively bigger for the first 4 loops and bring the size of the loops down from that point.

You'll want to stop about 4mm from the eye.

Form your last loop and cut the starnds at the eye.

Form a nice tight head with 3 whip finish wraps. Cut thread. Now time to finish the fly.

With a dubbing pick, pry out the inner loops. Black on the outside, red inside for this fly I tied.

thats awesome, now gotta pick up the materials and make some of those. how well do those things work in small trout lakes? would like to hear your experiences fishing with one of those

I never though of using them in lakes, but why wouldn't they. There's alot of better flies for lakes. I like to tie up a cone head red tag. Caught many 6+ lb rainbows with such pattern.

The size 8 hook is 2x heavy, apply a bit of sink it, and fish it chrommy style.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that juicy feeling in the mouth of the the trout or even a walleye. That gives us humble fisherman a miilisecond or more to set the hook.

I aslo like to substitute the diamond braid with pearl core braid. They look gummy when wet.

I am new to Rocky Mtn House. For the pas 3 months I was driving everywhere, going to the park, forestry road and putting on some serious miles. Instead of asking for spots, locations, doing it the "lazy" way, I put on thousands of KM's. only to find this location in the last week of the season. First day at that creek, I spooked them. Second day I was getting sniffs. Then I figered a pattern out, and I was hooking fish almost evey cast.

Very nicely done, curious if you've ever tried that fly on the bow?

I have only fished the Bow once and that was at the end of July with no success, only fished for about an hour.

I would say yes, it would work. Just make sure you are getting the fly to bounce on bottom. Use more natural colours for clear water and crazy flashy/fluorescent colours for stained water or in low light conditions. I've had fish swim 15 feet from their feeding lane to bust the meth.

It looks like a roe sack. Maybe that's why the fish are so hooked on them. ;)
