I don't know the name of this lake, but it was perfect for kids. The pike weren't usually very large, but they were plentiful and scrappy. By the time we had one in the canoe they had generally managed to soak the occupants, my daughters remember it as "Jerk-fish Lake".

A local told us about some falls that we could hike back into. On the first trip my oldest daughter lamented that many of the best eddys could not be reached for shore, I mentioned that it would probably be possible to portage a canoe down the rugged trail and she got super pumped. The next day was raining but she was determined, so we hauled my 80 lb Mad River in and out of this canyon in the rain.

We got into an eddy behind a big boulder that was full of walleye and sauger, between holding the canoe in the eddy, unhooking walleye, and snapping the odd picture... I can tell you, if I had 6 arms I'd still have been wishing for a few more. It was an adventure that neither of us will soon forget.

Here's a picture of an old Mitchell reel that Cranky gave me just before we left, and dinner. I caught well over 50 fish on that old reel on this trip. Once again, thanks a lot Cranky.

awesome...time well spent...that ol mitchel reel was built with very durable parts back then....my dad has one he bought back in the early 70's....still catching with it....

Those falls and eddy looks like the Haultain River.

The old reel in the picture that i gave to bushleague was bought new in 1965.

I think you might be right, I'd have to look at a map to be sure.

One thing I learned, and the pictures tell the tale... bring more than one "bug shirt"! I usually bring one sturdy long sleeve shirt to wear in the evenings and such, but on this trip the bugs were bad enough I wore it nearly the whole time. I was often reluctant to wash it, because I didn't want to go without while it dryed… she got pretty ripe between washings.

Thanks, yes, that was quite the thing.

On one hand I feel she was more fortunate than most, in that she lived until she'd had enough and went soon after. On the other hand she was my last surviving grandparent, having spent much of my life living in limbo these people and their big friendly homes were my constants. No matter where you ended up my grandparents were out there, waiting for me to make it back for a visit. As they disappear I cant help but feel somewhat more adrift everytime I lose one.

Hmmmm. Now you have me thinkin road trip. Getting sick of these mud fillled rivers......

How where the bugs. We just left there before you travelled up and wow the bugs could have carried a guy away. The 10th picture down with the walleye at the falls. Did you grab my jig off that log stuck on the center rock at the top right side of the photo.

Packing the canoe into those rapids was much like wearing a goldfish bowl full of mosquitos on my head LOL. They were pretty bad.

Nothing like a big smile first thing in the morning. It looks like the kids had a fantastic time. Memories are so important, you are making sure there are some great ones. I am in my early 60's, those times with my family in my youth, those adventures are still dear to my heart.

Looks like great memories that hopefully last a lifetime. Good job!
