I know...I spoil my kids.
 

My sons (14 & 17) want to start hunting this year. My 17 year old inherited my Mossberg Patriot (.308) with Nikon scope.
My 14 year old is an old soul...he just likes old cars, recurves over compounts (really wants to get a custom longbow when he's older).
So I ordered a Henry lever in .30-.30...brass with the octagonal barrel.
I picked it up today. It's real pretty...he just may have to fight me for it :)

Sounds like you lost that fight when you bought the vintage looking 30-30! You might want to bring the boys to the SPFGA reloading demo in mid April or they will run you broke with factory loads.

Yup. Even the venerable 30-30 ain't so cheap any more. $1.30 a round for the cheap stuff. I can load sierra pro-hunters (150 or 170) for about 53 cents. Next batch of powder might bring that closer to 60 cents.

My first rifle was a 30-30. I could get a box of Remington cor-lokt's for less than five bucks.

Them were the days.

And something a kid will cherish and respect is never spoiling, it's nurturing.

Intend on taking the SPFGA course Jim. I actually bought a used reloading setup last fall...just haven't had time to set it up.
Bought the boy a couple boxes of factory ammo to get him going (we'll likely see you at the range this weekend or next).
But I gotta get the reloading going...the factory 45-70 for the Sharps I bought last year is killing me :(

Callum loved the Henry...I didn't realize what a gentle calibre the 30-30 was...really pleasant and easy to shoot for a 14 year old.
BTW...looks like they had a good turnout for the orientation.

The 30-30 is a fine cartridge with sufficient case volume that produces relatively low pressures with game weight bullets pushed by powder weights approaching 35 grains. I am one of countless hunters that used a 30-30 lever gun to fill my deep freeze with deer and moose for many seasons. That rifle, which I got at age 14, is still with me. Although the 30-30 is well regarded as a game getter, it is also capable of impressive accuracy. A buddy did a build on a Barnard action that consistently groups in the .3’s.
I was at the Range Sun from 0900 - 1330 with the crew doing the orientation. There were about 40. One more Sunday in the schedule.
