Jasper trip. Need some help

Heading out with the family for the long weekend. Looking to fish the Athabasca, snaring or miette rivers. Maybe even bring out a dingy and get onto some of the smaller lakes that are open or will open over that weekend. Is it a waste of time this time of year? Any advice would be very much appreciated. I’ll be closest to the Athabasca off Hwy 93 but have heard it can be difficult to fish.

I'm keeping an eye on the replies. I'll be off to Jasper, with my float tube, the week after you.

I personally would hike into the Valley of the Five Lakes (5th lake).

If you have successes with other lakes/streams, keep us updated!

Jasper is never a waste of time fishing wise :)

AthB should be good still before the major snow melt.

For me, I'm heading out there as well. Planning to fish Talbot for lake whites and Pyramid for lakers.

The Maligne lake web cam is not up yet but I suspect the lake is still locked up with ice like most years.

Fishing this weekend will be limited. Maligne will still be frozen until about the 25th. Talbot and Pyramid. 3 , 4, and 5th in the Valley. Although only fish in number 5..some brookies..

Rivers.. Sunwapta River , Fiddle River, Maligne River (below Maligne Canyon), Miette River, Rocky River, Snake Indian River, Snaring River

Athabasca River From 12 Mile Bridge (km 22, Hwy 16 East) upstream is open.

Get your Parks License..And let us know how you make out !

Some friends bounce tube jigs in 20 FOW in Pyramid every spring for lakers and they do OK. Sometimes they get a pretty solid fish out of Pyramid.

I know that there are lakers in Patricia, which seem to have walked over from Pyramid, but there is a mercury warning on Patricia.

I do not know if Patricia is closed this year as I did not look at the regs yet.

However, there was some people in the know who reported 4 pd plus Lakers in Patricia for some reason.

We can all hope... ;)
I'm putting my money on the 30th and ready for the first week in June. Wanna wager?

It looks like that was it for web cam updates. Still stuck on 14-May. If anyone was up in that area this weekend, an update would be awesome. I'm guessing still locked tight but I'm an optimist :)

Wanted to update you guys on my weekend.

Fished less than I hoped to this weekend. I kicked tires on the Athabasca above and below the falls. Thought I located some good pools but with all the rain, the water was really dirty. Dark colour with lots of suspended solids.

I stayed at the Kerkeslin campground and was only a couple minutes from Athabasca falls. The pool below seems petty fishable but never tried it. Large crowds all day. My son and I hiked down to the pool just to find people throwing the biggest rocks they could carry into the water. Pretty annoying I thought, especially in a National Park. If I go back, I’d like to hike down again and walk to some quieter water downstream. More bears then I’ve ever seen in the park though. So be careful if you go anywhere.

Driving down 93a passed the falls where I tried to fish where the whirlpool river flows into the athabasca, once again with no luck, I passed the turn off for Moab lake. After no luck on the river, I figured why not. It opened that day and was worth a shot.

7.5km down a gravel road and then about 400 meters hiking from the parking lot. Great spot. Fish rising all around me as soon as I got to the water. First fish caught on dries all year. All rainbows about 1-2lbs. Beautiful spot as well. Went back the next day before we left for home and found several guys walking in with belly boats and kayaks. This is the way to fish the lake for sure. Hard to get a cast in unless you walk around to the far side of the lake where the brush isn’t right up to the bank. There are boats locked up on a small launch too just like I’ve seen on lake 5 in the valley. You can call to rent those and they give you a key.

Anyway, my weekend got much better after landing a few. 9.80/day for a license and instead of getting 3 days, I just got one for the year ($34) might as well go back later in the year.

Thanks for update. Those Rainbows were first stocked in that lake in 1955..
They stocked Atlantic Salmon back in the day.. There are a few lakers in there but you need to work hard..

SNAPFisher 05-21-2019 12:26 PM

Yes, thanks for the update. I was at Talbot on Sunday and the AthB looked way more stained than normal. I suspect the recent snow falls are the culprit. Once the main snow melts, it will likely stay that way. It will clear up in the fall though.

Did two days at jasper. As per previous posts hiked in my float tube to Moab. Not sure if the small pier the best launch location but it worked. A few risers tried dry and a variety of wet. Nothing on streamers, nymphs etc. Used a few dry and landed 3 using a small yellow humphy. Looked at Pyramid and another lake told to me by another fly fisherman. Winds were up and didn't want to chance getting blown across the lake in my float. Tried Malign were it joins Athabasca, water high and muddy. Malign lake mostly ice. Open water out to end of the tour boat launches.
