Reel

Hi,
I just bought an 8wt Sage and am looking for reel recommendations. Something with a quality drag that is not ridiculously priced.
Thanks.

How much do you want to spend?

Bolete 05-09-2020 12:39 AM

Less than $400

I love my Lamson reel, take a look at some of their mid-priced models.

X2... I have the Lamson remix HD for my Sage. Performed flawlessly on Pike up North and Redfish in Port Sulfur.

I was in the market for an 8 weight reel last year. After reading a lot of reviews, I came up with the Orvis Hydros SL. Recommended by a lot of shops as the "best buy". I've only used it a few times in the salt and no problems.

I put a Reddington Behemoth on my 8 wt Sage
Seems like a good price/performance match
2 largest fish so far 27lbs & 22lbs
Out into the backing several times, the reel seemed to handle them fine

Look @ ebay etc for used old school Lamson LP 3.5, the Behemoth is a great reel for the price

What are you fishing with it?

Everything bigger than what my 5wt will handle. Pike, Bulls, maybe steelhead, etc.

The Remix is a good choice. It is 50% machined (the actual reel). The spools are the same as the Liquid and are relatively inexpensive. For the vast majority of pike season, I like to carry at least 2 spools (ideally 2 rods, but this is not always possible), one with a floating line and another with an intermediate. I use the intermediate for stillwater fishing exclusively, but I would actually say that both spools get equal time on the water by the end of the year.

I like the added proof! I have to up mine at some point and now I'm thinking about this one. Thanks.
