Southern Alberta ice reports

Any one have any ice reports in the south part of the province? Mainly Calgary and south. Kid is wanting to get out and I want to make their enough safe ice to venture out. Thx!

Was at Chain off of 22 a few hours ago, it had around 1 unch of ice. No good for a while yet

Dalemead east of Calgary had about 5 inches yesterday. Still use caution, especially with the kiddos

4 nights in a row with predicted -14-18 C will do it.

Ya, should build 1-2 inches of ice in that time frame in the shallow waters, not so sure about the deeper stuff, be real careful out there:snapoutofit:

Eagle was good to go on the weekend. Around 5" where I was.

Any progress in the Pincher area? Doubting it.

Pine Coulee anyone?

McGregor had 6-8 inches tonight

PCR and TVR both frozen... I'd wait about a week as they only just froze

Spray Lake

Spray had about 6" of clear ice. Lots on the flasher and camera but only landed 2. Crazy windy.

Thanks for the update we were heading to either spray or upper kananakis ans worried ice might not be thick enough. 6 in is good!

I was by Newell last weekend and only froze along the edges. This was at the north end marina

MaxxiD 12-12-2021 06:38 PM

Chain had about 6-7" at the south end today

Solid 8 inch today by north dam. Fishing was good too, got 3 burbot and 3 whitefish. Interestingly, all burbot bellies were stuffed with 1-2 inch crayfish. About 10 years ago we would find tons of little perch in them, not anymore, not a single found today. Zero limit pike and walleye sure has something to do with it I think.

Heading out to our fave southern AB walleye destination next Sunday, so i'm hopeful. Forecast looks like ice making weather all this week, so should be solid walk-on ice by the weekend. It's time!!

graybeard 12-15-2021 10:09 AM

If this cold snap continues, we should see near 1" of new ice every night....in southern Alberta alone...

I am waiting for January 01 for a hard base to walk one... But that is just me.....Driving on the ice is a whole different animal....

Stay safe....

KJPFISH 12-15-2021 08:07 PM

9-10” of solid ice at Newell in a shallow SW bay

Poppa 12-16-2021 02:37 PM

if the forecast holds, there'll be a dozen trucks on the ice at Kinbrook at Christmas....

South Ab ice

With a fast freeze like this keep an eye out for ice breakers, they can ruin a fishing trip in short order.:mad0100:

Beaver Mines Lake

We were out at Beaver Mines Lake today (Dec. 19), the ice was about 5" where we were near the scout camp.

AK47 12-19-2021 08:19 PM

Spray lakes by Driftwood 8 inches solid ice. Fishing was slow. I blame the full moon :thinking-006:

Fisherdan 12-19-2021 09:27 PM

Solid 13” of ice at Crawling Valley today. Fishing was a bit slow.

Poppa 12-20-2021 02:43 PM

at my used-to-be-favourite walleye resrevoir (skunked for the first time ever yesterday....not even one on camera....) we had around 12" of ice. Most (if not all) of the southern AB reservoirs will be similar, I suspect.

graybeard 12-23-2021 08:13 AM

Bump to keep this thread on the first page....
Thanks,

If its that one, I hear the level is super low that would send them mostly to the bowl I'd think.

It WAS super low!! And you know what? We stayed out of that bowl because we're always worried about barotrauma. Thank you so much Wayne... I should have DMed you. We'll be headed back there in January, and I'll head deeper! 20ish FOW was absolutely dead....
