Sunday morning we cut the track of a wandering tom where he crossed a logging road, track was fresh in the new fallen snow, probably 4-6 hours old. released my old hound and he took after the track, cold trailing it silently. i walked out the track with a pup and he took up the trail as well, on his first lion hunt ever.
six hours later we returned to the rig successful, although all of us took quite a beating. the trail was approximately 4k from start to finish with an additional few k's to return to the truck. i had done a 40 k sheep hunt(three days) earlier in the year and it was a walk in the park compared to this hunt.
after numerous bayup's i took a young male lion that weighted in at 135lbs.shot(3) distance was one foot with a 44 mag,225gr hornady FXT. his front pad was 2.35" and his hind 2.08" probably 3-5 years old. his hide scarred up from numerous battles, some fresh, measured out to 7.5'. as well, somewhere along the way he had lost a third of his tail.
keeping sheep on the mountain.
