It is an interesting question... maybe people find it easier to control the spool with there thumb on the right hand? It is weird though as you end up switching the hand that you are holding the rod in every time that you cast. I did try a left handed baitcaster once, it was just awkward, but left handed spin fishing doesn't seem nearly as so. In fact, I found it easier for when I was trying to control the tiller on the boat and fish at the same time.

x2, pretty much sums it up right there. Spinning I run the crank on the left side, cant get used to doing this with a baitcaster though.
