So I did some testing on this shelf prior to paint and it will hold 6lbs before starting to slip, way more than I'll ever need. I will also add some moulding around the edge on both sides to stop anything rolling off.
I Also plan to add holes for tool storage (pliers, spreaders and the like).
As well, I plan on adding small strips of wood to the underside on the edge of the cut outs to eliminate the small amount of wobble I experienced.
