There was no explanation. I'm not sure on the NHL rules, but I would assume it's as simple as it had to be someone that was on the ice at the time to serve the penalty, and Lucic doesn't kill penalties, so he was the obvious choice.
I don't see any reason to read into it beyond that. I thought he was having a decent game.
