Fatality rate is a misleading indicator. The ease of transmission and things like the incubation period (potentially with no symptoms but still spreading the flu) are much more important indicators in determining the overall threat. 50% mortality of a relatively small number of infected is not as bad as 2-5% of the entire world population. Think about how effective we are at stopping the common flu...even with vaccines in place.
