The one's I picked up at TFH are soft plastic they easily slip over the bend/barb, as well there's no difficulty pushing 20 ga wire under them. FYI ... I also use some hard plastic coloured beads & drill out the centre hole slightly to get them over the hook turn/barb.
Putting them on the hook end helps me see which way the hook is facing & when a Whites comes in they normally go after the glow bead, when it disappears, set your hook quick because they will spit it just as quick.
In Sylvan, on a bright day & if there's minimal snow on the ice, I can see a brass w/w with a glow bead sight fishin in 12-14 fow. A Pink Mag will do the same, however, I find the glow beads illuminate a bit more in clear water. Add a Pink Mag to a w/w with a glow bead & it makes them that much easier for you & Mr. White to see sight fishin.
Trust this was helpful.
Cheers
