I've tried drilling out some hard beads but find they generally break on me when I'm tightening the wire up to them.
Where I fish you can't see bottom in 6 FOW. I seem to do best in 3-4' for sight fishing. Deeper than 6' I really on my flasher but like you say its hard to time the hook set that way.
