For this time of year and ice thickness but also softness, 3 batteries would have you covered. I'm 5 years now on my SM40 10 inch and have 2 batteries (original ones). Still getting 35-40 holes for March thickness. I do get less than that as the ice softens in mid to late March. That will also be a factor.
