Both Vortex and Leupold sell many of their scopes because of their warranty, but having a great warranty isn't such a good thing, if it gets used too often, as has been the case with Vortex.
As for magnification, I choose a range that works in both open country, and in the timber, like 3-10, 3-15, or 3.5-18.
