Fill in the form, send to gov, and they will send you back the registration with a specific number. Go buy some decals and stick on the boat.......all is free except for the cost of the decals.
I have never been asked for mine, but I do have a copy on board.
Another benefit, if your boat is floating down the river or across the lake with a ghost rider, the authorities can trace it back to the owner.
