You sir are correct.

We lost 1000’s of ornamental cherries in Calgary to it around 2010-2011. My own even had it.

You gotta remove it and burn it. In my case it occurred on the trunk. I used a sharp knife and carved it out. Here’s a decent read. Good luck.
