Warm clothes, 2X - 5 gallon buckets to carry gear, sit on and carry fish. Ice rod or 2, cheap walmart combo ones work ok. A ice scoop. A fishing buddy that has a power auger. The big cost is actually hooks. All my hooks are probably worth more than the rest of my gear not including the auger.
In the spring most of the time you can open old holes with your boot and really don't need a auger. The rest of the year you can watch others and when they move, use there holes. Not always a dead spot, just needs a better presentation with the right hook.
