I think if you buy alpha you can be very happy with 8x30's. However some of the high end 8x30's weigh in the low 20 oz range. You need to pay attention to eye relief as well on the smaller bino's.

Any decent roof prism bino in the 8x40 range is so close in weight and size it's almost a mute point. If you are spending under 500 I wouldn't go with a 30mm objective for hunting. If you're really counting ounces and are ok with spending 1k plus, I'm guessing you can get some really nice 8x30's.

I bought a little set of Diamond Back HD 8x32's for cheap compact glass on holidays, they seem ok, but they are no where near a set of old monarch 8x40's and not much lighter.
