If you use light enough line a wire worm or pair of wire worms will sink fairly quickly and easily , since you will most likely be in less than 10' of water for whitefish this time of year extra split shot weight isn't necessary.

Use a light fluoro or mono 4-8# tie your worms 90degrees to main line and just let them fall.

Keep a nice clean hole so your not fighting through the slush.
