Could be old stock, agree with that sentiment from some other posters.
That said, I have multiple boots with Vibram soles and have never seen this - some with a similar number of miles as some of the other posters in the thread. Makes me wonder if it isn't an issue with the batch of soles that Vibram produced  . Perhaps that is an angle to chase straight to Vibram?
