Yes, there is only one winner. However, I don't care who you are there is always someone richer, faster, stronger, smarter and on any given day you can get your rearend handed to you.
If you played to win and left nothing on the table then you can walk away with your head held high. And that is not mediocrity.
In the end you are only in competition with yourself.
